I can understand what you're saying about Jack Johnson and Muhammad Ali being genuine and not assimilating into mainstream society (especially during their times), but Floyd? Floyd's act is one of the fakest acts ever for a popular boxer. How someone can like Floyd's personality is beyond me.. to me it seems like the hip hop community should easily see him as as a phony and other people should see him as an annoying *****. Also, I think fans WOULD be a lot more likely to send someone like Evander Holyfield money than sending it to someone that acts like an idiot. I disagree with Ruskull about his view on ex-convict boxers. Don't compare Hopkins to someone like Tyson. Hopkins has been a GREAT role model and extremely disciplined fighter throughout his long career. Recently he has said some stupid ****, but that's a whole different subject to get into.
Sorry Heavyrighthand I didnt respond to you sooner, I had some business to attend to last night. As far as your question goes, Oscar has an exciting fighting style that makes fans take notice. Hes also a very attractive boxer, which for some reason makes him more marketable to fans. I dont know what poster that said Oscar's a good guy, but the man has cheated on every wife or girlfriends he's been with, he's far from a stand up guy.
To refute your previous assessment of what the public finds interesting...........Oscar has a very wholesome, and well mannered image in the press, and has no swagger, whatsoever. And yet he far surpasses Floyd, and Hopkins, in notoriety. Wlad is like a great big, overgrown, and more educated version of Oscar. Oscar, version 9.0 Wlad's immense size, magazine cover looks, advanced education, professionalism, and coupled with his brutal knockout power, will get the attention of the mainstream media, once he starts collecting titles.................and the February fight will see heavyweight boxing starting to get back to its feet, after so long without a star, and having four seperate titles, each meaning nothing, Won't happen overnight, but this will be the start. And the next step, when Wlad faces Chag, that will realy get the ball rolling.
I think the fact that Wlads personality is not interesting to most, will hurt him in the long run. I have already stated that it took Lewis many years of beating legends and good fighters before american fans gave him his just do, I think Wlad will face the same problem over the next 5 years until he beats every good fighter out there. As you remember Lewis had similiar credentials as Wlad, well spoken, from another country, and a sometimes boring fighting style that Wlad now has addopted from manny being his trainer. Wlad will have long road to travel before hes popular in the states, especially since the landscape of the divsion is full of just decent and above average Heavyweights out there right now.
Who is most? You? 13 Millions watch Klitschko vs. Brewster in Germany. 20.000 in Cologne, an Millions around the world.
In America hes not popular, I said hes probably extremely popular in european countries, I said this in one of my earlier posts.
For those who missed it, like me, this episode with Wladimir Klitschko will be on again on ESPN in a few minutes.
