No, not THE Jimmy Ellis. Another Jimmy Ellis, white dude who fought in the 90s, he wasn't good at all. Foreman beat him. Tony Tubbs lost by 1st round KO to this guy in 1993. Well, that's possible, Tubbs got KO'd by Lionel Butler in 1 some time earlier. But I seem to remember someone on a boxing forum was saying they were friends with Tubbs and they suggested he'd dumped that fight, ie. a fix. It probably wasn't filmed, but it might have been, local cable channel TV even. I've seen other Tubbs fights from that period and I seem to remember Ellis had some sort of local following when he fought Foreman (hey, all white heavyweights had some fans in those days for some reason)
My recollection was that Tubbs got hit with a solid hook right on the button. But then, I might be thinking of the KO loss to Butler.
I think this fight was on either the USA or ESPN weekly boxing shows, I vaguely remember seeing it, and don't remember anything particularly unusual about it, or there being any controversy.
I didn't see the Tubbs-Ellis fight, but like Sonny, I to saw many of his comeback fights during that time frame. I remember him looking very impressive in beating Bruce Seldon and one fight earlier seeing him get dusted in 1 by Lionel Butler. I also saw him fight a russian prospect named Alexander Zolkin-a fight in which Tubbs was awarded the decision, but lost in my eyes.
tubbs looked in shape. that punch did land. i remember tim witherspoon looking in good shape but put out lame resistance in denmark against super brian neilsson. tim never got hit like that though.
Yeah, it looked like Tubbs got caught. It looks quite legit, unless it was rehearsed. I doubt Tubbs was in shape, he rarely was. He didn't really stay upright long enough to have a look at him there.
Tubbs had a coke problem. I knew a few amatuer boxers who did coke at the weekend and fought midweek and they all got knocked out- most of them had good beards usualy and their opponents were not KO punchers yet each went out cold.
Its legit..... Tubbs got clocked on the temple on his right side.... That hook had power on it from Ellis baby...... Tubbs was caught cold.... MR.BILL:bbb
