Especially at light heavy. Short run there. Two good wins over a hall of fame champion which is fair enough. But resume is kind of thin in my opinion.
I don't think so, overall. He did have a short run, but you can probably count on one hand the number of guys who beat a LHW Spinks. I can see the argument about his resume being a little thin. He caught the tail end of a great LHW era. But I think he was a hell of a swarmer and a terrific fighter in his prime.
He was in tough, a very good fighter fighting in a division where he fought larger men at 5'6 he was short but did well against the big men, even when he moved up and older he fought well against Foreman for what its worth. I do not put him with the elite but he gives anyone a decent go. I would love to see him vs Greb or Langford I suspect he loses to both but should be interesting
Overrated relative to whom though? Are you saying that he gets rated higher than more deserving light heavies? I love him for the skill and style that he exhibited in beating good (and less than good) opponents and in over-achieving while losing against elite competition.
I think people who call him Braxton and Ali "Clay" are suspect, unless they are talking specifically about their early careers.
I think if Ali and qawi are bothered that I can understand but others being bothered on their behalf is gay
When he was Braxton (thru the second Saad fight) he was an animal and hungrier and meaner. When he changed to Qawi he was never the same again. Maybe the money changed him after the HBO Saad fight. But he never fought the same pitbull way again to me. So he will forever be Braxton 1980-Aug 1982 for me. Qawi was thw other disinterested and more cautious guy.
this is exactly what I think. But a guy like Braxton has to be razor sharp in there. If he's off just a little, it effects things a lot. Just no wiggle room for him and his B game. But the Martin and especially the 2nd Davis bout showed him to not be the same guy in there. He certainly didn't punch as often or with anywhere near the accuracy he did previously. He may have had the most accurate hands in the game at a time when there were lots of accurate guys in the sport. And he started to get hit more and more. The early Braxton version used to slip almost everything. He rolled so well with punches. The fact he was such a good fighter allowed him to fall down the ladder a few steps and still be effective as a 5'6" cruiser. There sure haven't been too many 5'6" highly effective cruisers since. I really like the job Braxton did on Rossman. And Saad. Just brutal. I was a Marvin Johnson fan but I was glad that bout never materialized. But he came up the hard way through Rahway when everyone was on the bandwagon of another good fighter in James Scott. What a tough time to have been a good lh, but not a great lh. Talk about shark infested waters, there just weren't a bunch of soft touches out there.
Several years ago someone posted a ring magazine rating list of all time great light heavyweights. Don't know what year it was from or If it has since been updated. But Dwight Braxton ( Qawi ) was around #13 or #14. Given the depth and history of that division it's hard to imagine why he'd be that high. He was certainly HOF material based on his two wins over saad and his eventual capture of a cruiser weight belt. But he had very few fights at light heavy, no amateur career, only a handful of title fight wins, and never really took control over any weight class he fought in.. There were actually a few good light heavys of his time who coexisted with him and eventually became HOF men themselves.. Marvin Johnson and Eddie Muhammad are at least two.
Yeah. Saad was one of my fav fighters at the time, but Braxton's style was so in your face that I wanted him to win because i thought he had a more exciting future. It stayed that way for 8 months then THAT Braxton disappeared. Maybe he lost the "Eye of the Tiger" like the character in the movie of that year. 1982. But I was greatly disappointed. Then when he came back he looked inflated and was a loudmouth braggart who I couldn't root for (except against Holyfield{who I think Dwight beat fairly convincingly the first time. I despised Duva fighters}). The earlier 80-82 Braxton was a silent 2 syllable ass-kicker. That is the one I liked.
