Throughout the history of boxing there have been fighters that have permanently lost their ability to take a punch after being brutally KO'ed.
Roy Jones and Meldrick Taylor instantly come to mind.

In Roys case he came back only some months against Glen Johnson after being KO'ed by Tarver, and look what happened!

Taylor is coming back waay too soon against Kelly, and I wonder how's he going to react to getting hit flush on the chin.

I am a bit worried about Taylor, because even though I am going for Kelly, I have always liked JT.

    We'll see on Sat.

I just think that he should've taken a tune up to clear his head and get his confidence back. Him going right back makes little sense except if you are a simple minded fool which Taylor is. He would've given himself a better shot with a good tune up. And the KO thing is another issue why. He's fighting too soon after a devastating KO. RJJ did the same thing. Yeah, the difference is that with RJJ, he literally LET Johnson KO him because he didn't throw back. At least JT will throw back. He's got a lot of the dog in him.

    Maybe.

Not because he has "lost his chin", but because of other factors.

Jones' weak chin was exposed because he lost his reflexes. This happened mainly because of his age. Going down from 200 to 175 also affected his condition.

Meldrick Taylor was so vulnerable because, like Reid after the Trinidad fight, something inside him was affected forever after the Chavez fight. He was never the same after that fight because of psychological reasons, not because he lost his chin. This could happen to Jermain Taylor, depends on how he is able to handle a loss.

Do you think Jones always had a weak chin?

    Just Curious.

I don't think so. The words "RJJ" and "hurt" were never in the same sentence until he got KOed. As you said, i think you can lose your chin after a brutal KO.

Yes. I think he was not knocked down before 2003 because of his defense and reflexes, which were excellent. It was almost impossible to touch Jones, at least it was very hard to connect a punch like the punch that Tarver landed on him.

for real though... sometimes after being knocked out, yes... you will never be able to take that punch again. Its your bodys defence mechanism in a way, and your ability to absorb that shock will decrease. regardless of your mentality...

I'm not disagreeing with you or anything, but that was a well timed, brutal left hand.

Even I would have been KO'ed by that punch....wait a minute....my chin is worse than Larry Merchants' after a long night of drinking.

Yes he did have a pretty bad chin. There is a video in his earlier fights where he was knocked down by a southpaw and pretty wobbly.I think its because of his reflexes that he seemed to have a good beard.

I think it's usually more a case of the physical damage to the brain, reduced reflexes, response.. can't anticipate or roll with punches aswell, let alone avoid them. it's not a video game that shows your "chin level" that decreases after every k.o

Hard to say, the shots that put him out were solid to say the least, and on top of that how often did he really get landed on flush with hard shots?

While his chin has almost certainly gotten worse, its just that with his style there is very little room for error, even a very good beard would go down when punches land on a chin thats hung out there and available like a slowed down RJJ does, thats why that style isn't common among good fighters.

kelly pavlik can make anyone look like that have lost their chin. The only way taylor can't get ko'ed here is to not stand his ground. He says he is coming to brawl but I think this will be a total cat and mouse fight until kelly gets him on the ropes and lands. Watch for the double jab and then the big right. After he lands two jabs taylor will do the same as last time exspose his chin for the KO.
