I just wrote this on a thread on the classic, it just spelt out to me, how lucky we were with the sport in the 80s... ITV spoilt us in that 1985-90 period. I think any fight that mattered from the States was shown live with full undercard. Then we got Sportsworld Extra to expose us to the Galaxy's, Chang's and Yuh's. Then as well as ITV basically dominating domestic boxing, with their live prime time Saturday night shows, Midweek Sport Specials and 'Seconds Out', the Beeb tended to pick up what was left on Sportsnight and Grandstand, and they too occasionally had a prime time Saturday night show for the likes of Bruno, Honeyghan, McGuigan and McAuley.
too right TBOOZE i was talking about this to my mate the other day, going to make a name the boxer picture 80's and early 90's tomorrow think you might get them all..
What was that show that put on classic fights? On late at night....I can hear the intro music but can't remember the bloody name of the programme.
They used to have that Fight Night series as well with Gary Newbon. Small hall shows where fighters could build up a bit of a following.
Funny enough with Tyson, he was getting rave reviews in BN and the American mags but his first televised fight over here apart from highlight reels I think was Mitch Green which didn't show Tyson at his best with Green's spoiling tactics.
There might be some of that on Youtube. I saw Hoko's brother Kevin fight Zammo from Grange Hill on there a while back.
When you think about it boxing was pretty big back then without all the straps although they were creeping into the game. When I was a kid it seemed ridiculous that there could be 2 "world" champs at the same weight.
Tyson's title win over Berbick was on ITV I remember- can't find that coverage anywhere though. Screensport was awesome back in the day for boxing.
Cheers but I'm a pedantic sun of a gun and want more that one second of Gary Newbon. I'm sounding like Newbon's wife now.
