missed ojeda-karass because of the stupid train home from work taking forever twisted but caught the 4 rounder at the end of the card. was actually fairly entertaining, due to the pace and styles matchup. 2-0 Ricky Vasquez vs. 1-0 Gino Escamilla (featherweights). Here's what I saw: Escamilla winged a bunch of shots nonstop for three rounds before tiring a bit and cutting his output in half. A lot of these power shots throughout the fight landed - thuogh they shouldn't have. A few badly stunned Vasquez and one scored a KD in the 2nd. But for the most part Vasquez controlled the ring and landed the shorter and more accurate blows. Even so, Escamilla landed at a fairly high percentage himself (due to Vasquez's carelessness/inattentiveness) and a good many of his punches did serious damage. I'd be surprised if Escamilla needed a Tylenol tomorrow...whereas Vasquez could probably use some Percosets. I'll compare the recipes I saw from these two in this fight: Ricky Vasquez Defense: Above average/good...with a big ****ing asterisk * Offense: Above average/good...with a big ****ing asterisk * Feet: Good/very good Chin: Poor/borderline china (dropped in 2nd, in trouble at least once in every round). Conditioning: Very good * = when he uses it. Ricky is an either/or type fighter. When he actually paid attention to his defense, he showed he could slip, block, and parry any of Escamilla's wide and relatively slow shots. Problem is, when he did so his offense ground to a complete halt until he was able to squirm out of the pocket and breathe comfortably at a distance for awhile. Which is a shame, because if he ever figured out how to counter he could be a beast. he's got good feet, good speed, snap on his punches, can put together a decent combination. when he throws, however - his mind is 100% on throwing...he seems to forget that a live body hits back. and that's dangerous for him, as his chin has already been shown to be shaky. Gino Escamilla Defense: Nonexistent. Mini Mayorga, as the following categories will prove even further. :yep Offense: Below Average. Consists of two weapons: a shitty worthless jab he wastes too much time waving sluggishly in his opponent's face, not even effective as a range-finder; and huge looping semicircle hook/bolo punches loaded with bad intentions (sometimes windmilling them with both arms and barely retaining his already somewhat clumsy footing). Fortunately for him these shots are very damaging when they land, otherwise his offense would be a total disgrace. Feet: Average/below average Chin: Granite, from what I gather. Vasquez landed some clean, short, thudding, straights to his jawline with high velocity and high frequency, Gino never blinked or took a backward step. Conditioning: Average/Below average. He sort of gassed in the last 90 seconds of the fight and even his power shots began to have as little on them as his pathetically impotent girly jab. He needs to work on this if he wants to ever move past 4-rounders. Judges gave it unanimously to Escamilla, moves to 2-0 and promises to be an exciting but limited action fighter. Vasquez has some glaring flaws that need to be addressed if he doesn't want to get starched by the first skilled fighter he faces, but also the potential to become a very fine boxer in his own right.
was i the only poster to catch any of this card? would love to hear some details on karass TKO3 ojeda. of course, they could very well have been talking about it during vasquez-escamilla, but no hablo espanol. :conf
