This is no knock on Frazier, as Norton is a very good fighter, and I’m not even saying Norton would beat Frazier. Norton had better technical ability, stamina is similar, better jab and technique in general, was most likely stronger. People may say durability, but Frazier didn’t fight anyone with the power of the guy’s that ‘exposed’ Norton’s ‘lack of durability’, apart from Foreman who did a similar job on both men. The only other common opponent that’s worth mentioning is Ali who actually rocked Frazier, and didn’t rock Norton. This conception that Frazier is more durable than Norton is based on Norton getting stopped even though, apart from Foreman who did a similar job on both, Frazier didn’t fight anyone with the power of the guys that stopped Norton, so its unfair to claim that Frazier was definitely more durable than Norton.
Frazier was a quicker & more fluid puncher & maintained a higher punch output. Doug Jones was no less of a puncher than Jose Luis Garcia who stopped Norton.
Besides being faster and better footwork Frazier had a pure warriors mentality who relished combat. Only HW in recent times who had that was Holy.
Power, punch resistance, handspeed, footwork and his physical dimensions were better suited to a pure pressure fighter, e.g. Frazier could more easily bob and weave to get under his opponents punches when closing the distance and then, once close, would be at a range where he could still get good leverage on his punches, whilst his taller, broader shouldered and longer armed opponents punches were somewhat smothered.
Frazier was more effective in putting on pressure. It's the difference between Kenny's cross arm defense and Joe's bobbing and weaving.
Well despite the fact they were both stopped in round 2 against Foreman, the body language tells a different story. Norton was completely devasted, glossy eyed, and on wobbly legs after being dropped by Foreman. This is how he always looked when badly hurt by a big puncher. Frazier had to be dropped 6x and was still raring. Frazier was glaring Foreman down, banging his fists despite how obvious it was he had no chance. Frazier did also get off the floor twice to beat Bonavena. He showed more grit when hurt than Norton, that is simply a fact. As for other intangibles, Frazier was the crisper puncher with better hand speed. He had much better head movement, was better in the inside able to get good leverage, the better body Puncher, and seemed to have a better rhythm and timing.
I can’t add anything to the multiple reasons cited why Kenny Norton should be very glad he never got a piece of Joe Frazier.
Stamina was not similar, Frazier's was significantly better, Norton would not have maintained and pushed anything close to how Frazier did in Manila
Frazier had better stamina w punch output , took a much better shot ... Norton was dropped three or four times in his career before he wa even a name ... Luis Garcia wa a blown up light heavyweight.
Everything but size and stamina Frazier is the standard for swarmers the heavyweight Henry Armstrong.....Norton was a good box puncher but the truth is he could be bulldozed by a puncher and the key to his success was his size, strength and herky jerky style his speed and power were average as was his chin but he could not fight going backwards because he dragged his back leg like a kickstand
I’d say (not really a true HW) Toney, James Toney loved fighting on that level of Holyfield and Frazier - I’ll also say it’s pretty obvious Fraziers chin is a level above, he got hit a lot and wasn’t detoured or shook up for long the FOTC took a lot out of him - Frazier and Norton were a different species, Frazier wanted to battle and would get into shoot outs so frequently Futch shortened up how many rounds he fought a day, I believe it was only about 6 or so because he was fighting in there, people earned a lot of dough in his camps… Frazier paid good money for tear ups like Eubank Snr would after him. Jimmy Young told RJJ sparring Frazier from 16 onwards ruined him… take no prisoners eh?… probably the reason Young fought the way he did - Norton on the other hand would spar LHWs because he had confidence issues.
Norton was a good, solid fighter--but not in Frazier's league for stamina and toughness--(particularly the Frazier of 1970-71 vintage.)
