He was dominating every round of the fight except for the 5th which Andrade won and the 4th which i had a draw (and that was being nice to Andrade), but in the 12th, he suddenly stopped punching, didn't use his upper body movement as much as he should've, etc. Was there short punch inside or something? I find it hard to believe it's entirely stamina related, as he was fighting just as relaxed in the 11th as he was in the 1st.
He looked a combination of gassed and hurt in the last minute of the eleventh, and it carried over into the twelfth. Fighting the kind of fight he did against a relentless guy like Andrade is very tiring. It's why Cotto didn't see the bell against Margo and why Popo was en route to being KTFO by Chico.
He was gassed but still could have got on his bike for the last 3 minutes like the master PBF..instead he wanted to put on a show and paid the price !!
Inactivity had to have played a role. He had also been recovering from a knee injury which kept him on the sidelines from most cardio-workouts for over a month, if I recall correcly. There was also a lot of pressure on him to perform in front of an American audience, in his hardest fight to date, and that might have taken its toll too. However, he had done 160 rounds of sparring in preparation for this fight and he was by all accounts in excellent shape, physically and mentally. For me, Bute fell apart because Andrade broke him down. Bute has a very good chin but the accumulation damage to the head and the body was too much, given Andrade's fair amount of power. After ten rounds, Bute was getting tired and more and more hurt. He took a fair bit of punishment in the 11th round and by the 12th, he was lucky to be able to make it out of his corner, I thought. He was forced to go toe to toe when his feet gave way and the rest is history.
He let his ego get the better of him. He was winning by fighting his fight -- circling away and jabbing the slower, plodding Andrade. Then in the 12th he suddenly got the idea that he would play Andrade's game and stand and trade. Big mistake. After exchanging a barrage of heavy handed shots, Bute was exhausted and hurt, and nearly lost the fight. Ego.
Thing is - even when Margarito was losing rounds to Cotto, he still made Cotto fight at a higher pace than he wanted to, and landed quite a few punches. Outside of the 5th, Andrade didn't land much at all and was fighting at Bute's pace, not the other way around. Like the commentators said in the 10th or 11th: "This should be Andrade's round in breaking Bute down, but it doesn't appear that way at all". It looked to me like Bute was more out on his feet than tired.
The slip/knockdown in the 10th gave him a false sense that he might be able to stop Andrade and he started to trade with him. He was totally out of gas midway thru the 12th, amazing that he got up that's for sure.
Bute's trainer said that Lucian was suddenly extremely gassed in the 12th and it's not a particular punch that caused it... When he went down, yes he was out on his feet on his way back up !
he was hurt a couple rounds before that as well but the ref broke them apart and admonished andrade for no reason
very true. People never give enough credit to how tiring it can be fighting a pressure fighter, even if you are outboxing him. You expend a lot of energy making them miss and moving in and out. It tires you out in the legs.
He was exhausted and rather than run or take a knee he decided to slug with Adrade and got hurt. His strategy wasn't too good in the last round that's for sure.
