Heavyweight champion Ruslan Chagaev has taken his first steps in the famous Universum-Gym in Hamburg after his serious injury on June 26th. He's fighting harder than ever for his recovery, and after five weeks of rehabilitation Chagaev is now able to cycle with a special bandage on his left foot and is doing some upper body workouts. "It's nice to have all the other guys surrounding me," stated Ruslan. "That gives me a big boost." Chagaev suffered a complete tear of his achilles tendon and therefore named the âchampion in recessâ by the WBA. He will have time to recover from his injury and has to face the winner of the August 30 fight between Nikolai Valuev and John Ruiz no later than June 26, 2009. "I won´t watch this fight," stated Chagaev in regard to the Valuev-Ruiz match. "I don't care about these two guys. I have beaten them both in the past. I'll be back in the ring and show who's the real champ." Ruslan's trainer Michael Timm adds, "He's working harder than before his injury. His will is stronger than ever. That why I don´t worry about him." First time for Ruslan at ringside after his injury will be on September 27th in Hamburg, when WBA cruiserweight champion
I don't think I have ever gone so fast from liking a fighter to hating him. He had all my respect and backing, regardless of injuries, until he picked Skelton. He lost me there...
"I don't care about these two guys. I have beaten them both in the past. I'll be back in the ring and show who's the real champ." ...I guess it's not too bad for Ruslan...whoever wins between Ruiz and Valuev, will have had to face both opponents twice. Chagaev will only have to face one of them twice...I would like to see Valuev retire Ruiz and see Ruslan find a way to KO Valuev...which would scare WLAD into a rematch with Calvin Brock.
For some reason, whether the phantom eye problem or whatever, Chag has not punched to his fullest capability as a pro.
