Apparently only 3 boxers are a box office draw in America

    And only 1 of them is American. It seems that Cotto, Pacquiao, and Mayweather are the only 3 guys that can attract an audience in America. Everyone else seems to come up well short of these 3. Ward is thought to be a good draw, but his fight against Green was almost called off because of slow ticket sales. Outside of the big 3, no one else seems to be able to crack the 10,000 mark in paid attendance. Arreaola and Vitali had about 7,600 in paid attendance, Williams vs. Cintron had a little over 2,000, and Berto vs. Quintana had a little under 1,000 in paid atttendance.

    Compare these numbers to the big 3. Cotto's last fight had an announced paid attendance of a little over 22,000(this may be inaccurate as no official numbers have been released). The live gate on that fight was estimated to be around $3M. Pacquiao's fight against Clottey had a little over 36,000 in paid attendance(41k total showed up). The live gate on that fight was a little over $6.5M. So those two fights did almost 60,000 in paid attendance and brought in almost $10M at the gate. Mayweather's fight against Mosley was in a much smaller venue, but had excellent numbers. The paid attendance was a little over 14K(still almost twice as much as any other fight not involving Mayweather, Pac, or Cotto in the U.S). However, despite having a crowd about 1/4 the combined size of Cotto and Pac's most recent fights, the live gate actually was higher than both those fights combined pulling in a little over $11M.

    So there's good news and bad news. The good news is that whether in a casino or a large venue; Cotto, Pac, and Mayweather have shown that boxing can generate large dollars in America. The bad news is that everyone else outside these 3 have failed to prove they can bring in big money anywhere in America. Will the tide ever turn in the U.S?

    Here's a link to the article where I got the figures;

    It's pathetic when you consider that even lower league football teams can easily get 10,000 in attendance for their matches, and that's every week for a whole season.

    It's boxings fault for the low turnouts. First they don't have cards with multiple great matches. With all the belts out there you can never have one champion. They have no structure which would force the best fighters to face each other. It's run by the promoters and they don't let the top fighters fight other top fighters until money has been made. It's not on free TV anymore. You also have the mixed fighting shows now that have captured most of the younger generation. They do most of thier big events as pay per view as well, but at least they have multiple fights with top matches on the same card. Easier to stomach spending when you feel you're getting your monies worth.

    Interesting article. Lets look at those 3 fighters.
    Pac: besides being an ATG the guy has a whole country behind him, trains in LA where he regularily meets movie stars.

    Floyd: Extremely talented and flashy personality this attracts a good portion of sports fan that either want to see him dominate or see him lose badly, either way people pay to see who if he can back up all the shet he talks.

    Cotto: Although the least talented of the three, the guy fights anybody and although he has a low profile personality he attracts not only puertoricans but fans that want to see an entertaining fight and Arum has been able to channel those attributes pretty good.

    I believe there will always be cash cows in the sport whether they are americans or not. Will the tide ever turn in America? Hard to tell, when you look at the golden years of boxing there was some kind of social, political, or economical issue going on (there maybe people that are lacing up the gloves right now just because they need money as a result of this recession). There's guys out there that could get to the "Cotto" level but their stories need to be told through a good marketing campaign.

    Cotto fights usually in New York (huge Puerto Rican community) on or around the day of the Puerto Rican Pride Day when the Puerto Rican contingent in the city is at a pitched frenzy. Of course he sells out! Oh yeah, and he's a good boxer that fights just about anybody and everybody in front of him.

    I decided not to include Margo because he won't be a draw anymore.

    don't think Margarito was that big a draw anyways. I wonder what his gate receipts were when he fought Clottey and Paul Williams. Surely less than 1M

    The Clottey receipts had nothing with him. Cotto/Quintana was the main event fight on that card. I imagine that the gate on the Williams fight wasn't very impressive because Margo wasn't any kind of draw until he beat Cotto. Before that, he had trouble headlining WCB cards. I think that his PPV against Gomez did something like 30,000 buys.
