You could have a so called big name fighter fighting in a not important fight and it won't do big numbers either. How much did Cotto vs Jennings sell at the gate? Less than a million.

It works both ways. Both are important.

Figures way off. Pac-Clottey fight was reported at 50994 attendance. The 6.5mil figure is also what Jerry Jones paid to host the fight, not the actual gate revenue.

Just read the article, why would there be 2 conflicting attendance figures with a difference of 10k? Seems a bit desperate.

Guys boxing is not dead at all, it's surviving more than most sports. MLB, NBA, NHL, and even the NFL are struggling with some of their teams and have reported many losses. Some teams even have to borrow money from their leagues. Boxing in the other hand is run by very competitive and main problem by selfish people who fight against each other. Many fights are thrown on same nights or a week after another. Showtime and HBO compete very selfishly and all these silly contracts. The numbers boxing is putting are very good when you take all that in consideration. Boxing is here to stay and remember their numbers are actual numbers not made up by someone name Dana White.

"Top Rank took a similar chance when it brought Philippine megastar Manny Pacquiao to Cowboys Stadium in March. It was rewarded with a paid crowd of 36,371 and a gate of $6,359,985, according to post-fight tax reports filed with Texas boxing regulators. Counting complimentary tickets delivered to sponsors, media outlets and others, the Dallas fight attracted 41,843, well short of the 50,994 that the hype-conscious Cowboys announced, but still an epic number for stateside boxing."

The author of the article is getting his info from actual tax reports, so you can bet that they're pretty accurate. It's not unusual for promoters to give out inflated numbers.

I thought Pavlik was pulling huge numbers at Boardwalk hall in Atlantic City?

UFC has done an incredible job of branding 'UFC' as something that is a exciting and makes people watch. You can trace that back to 1 company dominating an entire industry. Boxing doesnt have that right now except for names like Pac or Floyd.

Don't the Klitschkos do pretty good at the gate whenever they fight in the US? They may not draw over 50k like they do in Germany, but it's no 200 ticket affair, either.

Neither one of them fight in the U.S anymore. Vitali is the only one out of the two that have fought here in the last couple of years. His fight against Arreola had a paid attendance of around 7,600.

Khan in the near future is going to sell out arena's in the U.S, i heard his debut fight at MSG New York was a sell out 5000 in the smaller arena there.

Good thread and interesting stats, but I just thought I'd point out that while Cotto is a Puerto Rican Countryman as a Puerto Rican he is also a legal American citizen and needs no documentation when traveling to and from Puerto Rico and the United States. If he choose to maintain a permanent residence in the US he, like every other Puerto Rican, would have full voting and other rights without having to go through any citizenship testing or qualifications as Puerto Rico is a part of the United States. Mayweather and Cotto are the two Americans on the list.

I'm not an idiot, I know exactly what status, rights and privledges Puerto Ricans have in relation to the United States. Regardless, Puerto Ricans label themselves as Puerto Rican not American. Cotto is indeed a naturalized U.S citizen and could run for president(when he turns 35) if he wanted to. For practical purposes though, I'm not going to classify him as an American.

    Thanks for the numbers, Reg.:thumbsup

Those are a little lower than I expected. Didn't Wlad sell out the garden vs Ibragimov, or close to it?
