British featherweight champion Paul Appleby has been made an "unbelievable" offer to defend his title against Martin Lindsay in Belfast next year, according to his manager Tommy Gilmour. Belfast-born Lindsay, 26, now based in Canada, was originally scheduled to meet Appleby in a final eliminator for the title earlier this year. But the Irishman withdrew and the South Queensferry boxer was allowed to fight compatriot John Simpson, whom he beat on points in June. Appleby, 21, defended his belt for the first time against Esham Pickering at Glasgow's Bellahouston Leisure centre last month but faces a tougher opponent in Lindsay, who boasts the same ring record of 13-0. Gilmour believes the offer to take Appleby to Belfast's Ulster Hall on March 7 for a mandatory defence - understood to be in the high five-figure range - was just too good to turn down. "After hefty negotiations with Hayemaker Promotions, they came up with an unbelievable offer," he said. "It is the biggest amount ever offered to a champion I've had and Paul is blown away by the deal. "I've had lots of big purses in the past but this is exceptional and I had no option but to take it. "We are disappointed not having it in Scotland but, first and foremost, I'm Paul's manager and I need to get the best deal I can for him. "Paul believes he would beat Lindsay wherever the fight takes place and there will probably be three English judges so there is no worry about a hometown decision." http://www.sportinglife.com/boxing/news/story_get.cgi?STORY_NAME=boxing/08/12/10/BOXING_Appleby.html
will be on Setanta then. Hayemaker seem to be throwing the cash about, I hope it works out for them. Maybe they are even signing Applbey. They can match him with Derry Matthews straight after.
Good fight to make. Looking forward to it. Confirmed on Hayemaker site that it'll be on Setanta. http://www.hayemaker.com/Events/EventDetails.aspx?Event=5
Good fight to make. Proves that Hayemaker mean business by giving fighters a decent wage in order to take risks and make the best fights. Good to see two young prospects matched against each other - SN would never do that in a million years.
Cracking fight this. Two young prospects. If Appleby is disciplined I reckon he could win on points but he might get drawn into a brawl. Hope Appleby wins, nevertheless a cracking fight. I thought one might back out...good it's on Setanta too.
What the **** does the 3 English judges and hometown decision mean? I guess theyt think Lindsey will win.
tommy gilmour is a shite talker when it comes to purses, paul will be lucky if he clears 30 grand, fact,:--(
