April 19 1991 28 y/o Evander Holyfield defeats 42 year old George Foreman

That left hook from Holyfield at 3:47 after Foreman rabbit punched him was near perfect. I think Holyfield could have KOed him if he wanted to. But he always likes a long brawl.

 

I was in my first job about 5 years out of college, haha, so I guess you got me.

The age divide on this thread is very appropriate for the fight, which was promoted as “The Battle of the Ages.”

Back then, we had to go to the cable company, stand in line and get a box to order a fight (so I was a regular, haha). At the cable office for this one, if you ordered the fight you got a pin button with either “You Can Do It George” or “I’m With You Evander” on it.

The lady gave me Evander and while I loved both fighters, I asked if I could trade and get a George pin. She said, ‘You’re young, you’re supposed to be for Evander.’ I told her I was torn but I wanted to see Foreman make history so she swapped them for me, haha.

If it happened today, they’d give me a George pin and an AARP card, lol.

Over the years I collected many fight posters (most of which would later end up on our walls when my brother and I opened a gym) by asking for them when I returned the cable box. They had no use for them after the fights. As a frequent customer I got to know some of the front desk workers and would ask if they would hold it for me after the fight.

I have officially lived long enough to have ‘good ol’ days’ to remember.
