Good point. Someone wrote a good speculative post a while back about the UK not being "ready" for a streaming model to compete with the big boys for a good few years yet. I'm not one to really get all "corporate suit" about boxing, but it was an interesting take.
Allen/Browne is a decent enough fight but it shouldn’t be used as part of a PPV so Khan fights on Sky. Although Khan does monster ratings for Sky I doubt many would plonk down £20 to watch him in the middle of the night given he’s a massive underdog against Crawford.
Another Cheeseman esque card will not be tolerated by the Sky big wigs. Smith has made that clear. On a side note, how poor has the amount of boxing being thus far in 2019 for brits. We are nearly in March: BT have provided nothing; channel 5 have provided nothing; Dave have provided nothing, Sky have provided 1 sub standard card. Thought we were in a boom period ?
Allen Browne is an ok average Saturday headliner. It should never be headlining a stepping stone to Khan PPV show ever. Eddie is taking the **** out of sky at the minute and in turn UK fans. Joshua gone to USA. Taking Yafai, Taylor, Burns and Buatsi with him Crolla v Loma - big fight gone USA. Brook v Vargas - looks like it’s heading to USA. Khan v Crawford - USA. Smith “likely to fight in USA” Ryder likely to be on canelo undercard. Coyle touted to be on a USA card. Whyte if he fights Breazeale will more than likely be in USA as DAZN will be fronting the purse bid. Johnson, Campbell, Quigg, Fielding, Cox are the only other moderate names who are available and none of them are big enough to headline the o2. Burnett out injured. Matchroom stable is spread extremely thin at the minute. Eddie needs to make more signings at home or in the USA so his stable can cope with his expected shows.
Wouldn't surprise me to see Usyk make his HW debut here to save the card. I would presume that behind the scenes, he is already in training although 8 weeks to 20/4 is cutting it very fine for both himself and his 1st opponent (Povetkin?). Matchroom need to pull their fingers out pdq. A previously promising card is currently looking anything but.
