Any old-timers here know anything about McBride. I recently watched his fight with Bob Satterfield and he looked like a pretty handy fighter. In the Satterfield fight he displayed a good, stiff jab and solid left-hook. Also had very good defensive skills slipping punches and effectively tieing up Satterfield when he needed to. He had Whitey Bimstein in his corner so that might explain his excellent ringcraft.

Afterwards Satterfield claimed that he broke his hand in the 2nd round though not sure if this was confirmed or not. On the occasions Bob did tag McBride, Archie seemed to take a good shot and we know Satterfield could bomb.

Anyone have any other McBride footage or any information on him?

Patterson wrecked him with speed in the only other filmed performance I've seen of him. McBride was a good journeyman of the era and he provided a solid test for anybody. One of his best efforts was against then number 1 ranked Nino Valdes, whom he had beaten before. Many felt he deserved to win that fight.

He was managed by Budd Schulberg, theres a great essay about it in his book Ringside.

I got 3 rounds of McBride against Floyd Patterson and full 10 rounds of McBride - Willie Besmanoff.

Apparently Besmanoff complained that he had a cold when he fought McBride hence his lackluster performance. I also read that Valdes was gifted the decision in their bout.

GPater11093, the Schulberg book is on my "to buy" list - is it a good read in your opinion?

Yeh it is a good read. Two essays stand out, the one on McBride and the other on Mike Jacobs.

I read an article by schulberg in a shortlived burt sugar magazine all about his time as mcbrides manager. He explained how he made sure mcbride got the best of everything, training camps etc was groomed along etc but he found the whole process an eye opener to say the least and time consuming. He got mcbride into the garden and had to take on another "manager" to get in because thats how you got a fighter into the garden back then, somebody told you that you needed another partner if you wanted your fighter on the card.
He felt mcbride was robbed a few times out of town. He was obviously another tough capable fighter who didnt quite get there but could give anyone a fight.
