I don’t think this record can ever be broken. Especially given that careers these days simply don’t reach that number of fights. While most fans are well aware that Archie Moore is boxing’s knockout king with 132 KO’s, I feel that it’s an often overlooked achievement. In a very old sport where the main objective is to stop your opponent in his tracks, having the distinction of having done it more than anyone else is truly something. In addition to this unique record Moore defeated a practically endless list of hall of fame inductees and ranked contenders, fought until the near age of 50 back when it was unheard of. He also had somewhere around 46 wins at heavyweight as well. Archie Moore in my mind is a definite lock for the top 5 best fighters of all time. EDIT: I have been corrected. Apparently Archie Moore does NOT hold the all time KO record as demonstrated later in this thread.
That is Amazing, Sandy Saddler, who I believe is 2nd or 3rd on the all time KO list could have passed Moore. He retried at age 29 with 104 KO's. This lanky tough man was only stopped once in 163 fights! And it happened in his 2nd pro fight. You'll never see that again.
It is an amazing number, but with better record keeping, I reckon it would never have reached the top, as one Mighty Atom possibly as much as doubled the Ol' Mongoose's record. But as mentioned, I do not see anyone topping it now.
There's also a lot of dross on Archie's record about 35% were third raters.Great fighter but his ko record flatters him a bit ,imo.
Eh... when you have that many fights and many of them against great men, there are always going to be some bums. No one who has been in that many bouts has fought only the elite. He also took whatever he could get because he needed the money
No blame attached, it's just a fact.8 debutees 2 of whom were wrestlers, 23 others had losing records. He has about 7 noteworthy ko scalps at heavyweight imo,
To be fair generally speaking most fighters records are 90 percent dross. I’d say Archie has far less then the average. Archie did used to take small time fights between big ones because he didn’t like paying for sparring partners so that’s part of the dross I suppose. But clever on his part to make money pad his record off usually a loss of money.
Yeah, for a long time Moore was credited with this record - but for quite a few years now, Bird's BoxRec record has shown the most knockouts. It's been mentioned several times her on Classic.
I did too. I’ve never heard of that other guy. Every source I’ve ever seen said Archie had the most KO’s in history but maybe someone was overlooked .
