What are we saying a pull up is?

Is the the one with the pronated grip, palms away from you?

I am in terrible shape right now and I just set up my chin up/pullup bar and after a few push ups to warm me up did 12 on my first go and 15 on my second.

Then I did 18..ok 17 (last one was a bit dodge) chin ups (with your palms facing you)

I wasnt cheating either, they are ****ing hard but I didnt think what I was doing was that much, Im am far from any kind of an athlete.

The point i was trying to make was that if you can do 20 pull ups, you are in pretty darn good shape. Out of maybe 100+ in my unit, maybe 20 did 20+ pull ups. So that's like 20%. A lot of guys doing between 15-19. And keep in mind that you do have to go down all the way when we get tested and you can't cheat and that really does matter. The guys who go after pull up records DO NOT go down all the way where their arms are nearly straight and they have to go back up. That makes a huge difference. I could half ass my way to 20+ easily if i only went down half way or 60%. But tell a guy to do down all the way and come back up and do it 20 times and it's tough.

Are you by chance a small and light guy with some upper body strength? Because one thing i noticed while being in the Marines about pull ups is that small guys who weigh very little with short arms do have an advantage. The distance they have to travel between pull ups is much shorter than a guy with long arms.

And usually, huge guys who are strong as hell still struggle to crank them out. The real disadvantage are the tall, lean guys. Those long arms make it tough for them. You almost never see those type of guys do 20+. So your body shape do play a role. But some of those guys are great runners and can hump (hike) all day. :good

    Im pretty average.

Just a tad over 6ft and about 84kg (185 pounds).

I would consider myself one of those tallish lean guys as my arms and forearms dont have a lot of muscle or definition.
    Just average really.

I think more than anything my technique is probably not proper and even though I dont feel I am, Im probably cheating.

i can do 8-10 (depending on my energy levels) pullups (palms out wide grip) with a 45 pound weight hanging from my waist and probably 25-28 regular pullups in a row (no additional weight)....i used to be just awful at pullups then i really started strenghtening my back an that made all the difference.....still, Archie Moore doing 100 consecutive pullups in a row is just plain freakish.
