I find this an interesting question because I've been looking through my own list, which is young and really not analyzed nearly as much as it will be. I try to fairly go by a mixture of how I think fighters do H2H at their best with other greats of their respective division(s) and their accomplishments-like I assume most do. Anyway, just the way I have it now, I have them both in my top ten. It's all subjective, I know, but does this strike anyone as being particularly out of whack? I mean even if you disagree, do you think it's within reason that I place them so highly or that I place them so close to each other? What do you think? Are they close? Do they both belong in the top 1-20 or so? Who do you rank higher? Talk to me.

I rate Moore borderline Top10 while I rate Louis between 15 and 20. It´s very close though. For me only the first six a clear locks for their places than there are around 10-15 fighters fighting for the other 4 spots in the top 10. Moore and Louis are two of them.

Both very different stylistically but in terms of ability Louis I believe to be a level above Moore who came a cropper a few times against the elite, in terms of longevity both are excellent but Moore has a clear edge. Resumes are close but Louis was certainly more dominant. Moore fought in more weight classes but Louis fought men who'd have a shitload of weight on him. Depends what you go for but Louis by a distance in my view

I suspect if you talked about Moore being P4P better than Louis in the 40s-50s they'd lock you in a mental asylum

    This guy here is right.

But having said that, it's very close now. Moore has an exceptional top to bottom resume, absolutley extraordinary longevity and a stack of title defences way past his prime. You can rank Moore without being dragged to a lunatic asylum now.

I have no problem with which way about you rank them. Last time I jigged my list I had Louis at #14 and Moore at #15.

    Nice pics by the way.

I don't know about that. Moore beat some ATG fighters like Harold Johnson, Jimmy Bivins, Lloyd Marshall, Holman Williams. Some believe he was robbed in that 2nd charles fight too.

Louis certainly struggled with Schmeling, Conn, Charles, Walcott, and Marciano. I rate Louis as the # 1 heavyweight of all time, but Archie Moore can compete and beat anyone in a h2h sense at his peak.

I have seen some put Ali in their LB4LB list and if that was the case I would rate Louis higher. Louis is # 1 at heavyweight but LB 4 Lb falls behind Marciano. Moore had to be top 175lb, being that Ezzard campaigned as a heavy and never won a title.

Moore was great, Louis was greater, although slightly heavier

Based on resume I rate Moore higher. But I think they're close. I think Louis is slightly underrated on any P4P or ATG list.

Bump. Started thinking about it again. Want more input.

Thanks. I think it was the Hagler/Hearns/Jheri curl signature when I did this thread. It was all fact too. I never lied about any one of those three subjects.

I don't see any point in keeping numerically ordered p4p lists, but Louis belongs in the conversation at the very top historically along with Ali, Holmes and about zero other heavies.

So, yes, he and Moore should be close since you can't argue against having Moore at the top as well.
