Pendler was a pretty good fighter though. There is no shame in loseing to him imo.

If you exclude the LaMotta bouts Robinson's record for fights between 141 and 152 against top 10 fighters is 24-0-1.

Arguably Spinks deserved a place in the top 10.
That's because the heavyweight division was WEAK, it lacked any DEPTH, around 1978.

People assume the 70s was full of loads of good heavyweights all at once, but there were times when it was horrible. The late 70s had very few outstanding contenders.

But still a 6-0-1 fighter who's best result is a draw with LeDoux, getting a top 10 Ring rating? I know they were corrupt at the time but still... I guess an Olympic Gold has always gone a long way!;)

Actually, you're right. I just checked Spinks' record again.

He beat Alfredo Righetti, an unbeaten Italian with a meaningless (in world terms) 27-0 record.

    Draw with LeDoux.

And beat Pedro Agosto, a journeyman who I believe played Spider Rico in Rocky the same year. (I may be mistaken)

    And 4 other bums.

Yep, that's NOT ENOUGH to get any sort of world ranking, even in dire times like early '78.

    I stand corrected.

And, yes, in 1978 THE RING was corrupt.
The U.S. Heavyweight Championship Tournament scandal proved that.

Is the boxing register using RING rankings or some other ones, or just making it up ?

That was Pedro Lovell; he lost to Norton, but got a draw with Leroy Jones.

Ok, that means Leon wasn't even mixing with the same class of opponent as Balboa !

They credit Fleischer, Goldman, Nigel Collins and the London Publishing Company, so yes I guess they were using The Ring and The Ring Record books

Where are extra 15 wins then?

I have Moore beating: Richards (x2), Chase (x4), Bolden (x2), Marshall (x2), Cocoa Kid, Williams (Holman) (x2), Sheppard (x2), Williams (Doc) (x3), Smith (x2), Bivens (x2), Hall, Johnson (x4), Morrow, Lytell, Slade, Dunlap, Henry, Maxim (x3), Valdez (x2), Baker, Olson, Pompey, Anthony, Durrele (x2), Rinaldi and Lavorante.

I'd be interested to see Floyd Mayweather Jnrs record against ranked opponents.

Well it will be and 0. Because there are 17 weight divsions there are more top 10 fighters now a days, up to 187, compared to at the most 88 when the classic eight was all that was rated. Even if you factor in 130lbers, 140lbers and 154lbers that is still only 121 fighters. And it should noted The Ring actually went back (rightly IMO) to just rating the classic eight in the 80s.

For the record I reckon Mayweather has a 18-0 record...

I don't believe boxing register is entirely accurate. I've seen instances in which it seems to be wrong. For example, it lists Tommy Gomez as unranked when Jersey Joe Walcott fought him, but I have a RING magazine from shortly before the fight in which he's listed as the #6 contender, and he did nothing but win two more first-round knockouts in the short time period between that issue and his fight with Walcott.

I agree; it does seem flawed to a certain point. I loathe Fleischer so hence the reason I want to see SuzieQ49's evidence to show the Register wrong in this instance...
