Archie Moore had 98 fights with ranked contenders. Anyone with more?

I doubt Hascup has told you, that Rosenbloom met 172 different boxers who, at one point or another, were top-10 ranked by The Ring. That's simply not possible, and way, way too high!

He Grant, I have been on these boards for a long time but, with all due respect, I have never seen anyone rating Mike higher than Archie, me included, and I am a big Spinks fan. Please let us know who has done so because I am quite curious now.

Bigger lightheavyweight wins than whom? I personally feel Virgil and Antonio Tarver are the most overrated 175 pounders I have ever seen.

This. Well put Double M. I am still trying to figure out who has rated Mike higher than Archie on these boards.

    As a point of comparison...

In the All Time 175 Survey here from 2 years ago, only 23 out of 24 volunteers had Archie in the Top 15. And equally bizarre, only 23 out of 24 had Ezzard in their Top 15. Spinks was just 1 of 2 to appear on all 24 lists (Tommy Loughran being the other).

The Top 5 tally after applying the scoring criteria read:

    1. Ezzard 2,145 points (16 - 1P)
    2. Archie 1,715 points (2 - 1P)
    3. Spinks 1,065 (2 - 1P)
    4. Tunney 1,005 (1 - 1P)
    5. Langford 790 (2 - 1P)

***The 24th 1P vote went to Roy

how much time did it take to compile research that ? impressive
Soldier Bartfield comes to mind here off the bat think he has 225 plus fights
but I'm just guessing on a pure warrior here who fought everybody

So who are your top 10 light heavyweights?

I rank Virgil as a really good light heavyweight champion. Not an ATG, not top 10, but good.

And Virgil didn’t clean out the division. There were something like seven or eight guys who held belts during his reign and when he lost to Michalczewski when he tried to add the WBO belt to his IBF and WBA (never held WBC) championships.

Nice resume, but he didn’t clean out the division.

I also don’t agree that Virgil had better wins.

Ya, I was on that poll. But who rated Mike over Archie?

He did, however. I took a screenshot of it, though I don't know how to post it. I can send it to you if you would like. The exchange was as follows:

Me: "Hey Henry, I don't mean to bother you but you are the go-to guy when it comes to boxing stats. I think I have a simple one for you, but I was wondering you knew how many top-10 fighters Ray Robinson fought and what his record against them was?"

Hascup: "Well he had 201 fights and fought 58 Top 10 contender when they were rated in the top 10. That means he fought 143 that weren't rated. He also fought 71 fighters a total of 108 times that were rated in the top 10 at one time or another."

Me: "Is there any fighter with more bouts against top-10 fighters?"

Hascup: "The most is Maxie Rosenbloom he fought about 113 fighters that were rated in the top 10 when he fought them and 172 fighters that were rated in the top 10 at one time or another."

No need to send me anything, as I have no doubt, you're telling the truth (I don't see why you wouldn't!), when you relate this exchange with Hascup.

However, I respectfully say, that the Rosenbloom numbers can't be true!

Going by BoxRec, Maxie had a total of 298 pro fights - against 172 (if I have counted correctly) different opponents.

Going by The Ring's end-of-year lists, 59 (again, if I have counted correctly!) of the 172 were top-10 ranked - at one time or another! I don't have access to the Ring's monthly ratings, so I'm sure there must have been some, who had been ranked for a short time - without ever appearing in the end-of-year lists.

So the actual number of world ranked (at one time or another) opponents is probably a little higher than my 59... but 172 is obviously an impossibility!

I did this off and on on Saturday and Sunday and it probably took an hour to get all the competition lined up (largely because I messed it up twice), probably about two and a half hours to mark down all the contenders, and then probably about half an hour to do a double check.

So all and all, about 4 hours. Currently am doing Rosenbloom (though it's taking longer because I have far less free time during the week) and he has indeed already passed Moore in fights and I'm only about 3/4 of the way through.

That's insane. Were they all ranked at the time?

Like to see the numbers of ranked at the time. Previously I think I've seen something like 45 wins for Robinson which is a crazy number as it is. More than what most current fighters have had fights. Wonder what it is for Moore.

I quickly did this so the numbers may slightly be off, but I counted 32 active opponents in 52 active fights (some like Bivins were only active for some fights, in his case 3/5) with a record of 34-14-4. A good amount of fighters were active previously, while probably even a larger amount were active in the future.

    Here is the list

    Teddy Yarosz (0-1)
    Eddie Booker (0-0-1)
    Jack Chase (1-0)
    Charley Burley (0-1)
    Nate Bolden (1-0)
    Lloyd Marshall 2x (2-0)
    Jimmy Bivins 3x (2-1)
    Holman Williams 2x (1-1)
    Curtis Sheppard (1-0)
    Ezzard Charles 3x (0-3)
    Oakland Billy Smith 3x (2-0-1)
    Bert Lytell (1-0)
    Charley Williams 3x (3-0)
    Leonard Morrow 2x (1-1)
    Henry Hall 2x (1-1)
    Harold Johnson 5x (4-1)
    Karel Sys (0-0-1)
    Jimmy Slade (1-0)
    Bob Dunlap (1-0)
    Clarence Henry (1-0)
    Joey Maxim 3x (3-0)
    Nino Valdes 2x (2-0)
    Bob Baker (1-0)
    Bobo Olson (1-0)
    Rocky Marciano (0-1)
    Yolande Pompey (1-0)
    Floyd Patterson (0-1)
    Tony Anthony (1-0)
    Yvon Durelle (1-0)
    Giulio Rinaldi 2x (1-1)
    Willie Pastrano (0-0-1)
    Muhamamd Ali (0-1)
