Just saw some Archie Moore fights. I was impressed. Therefore: How is he ranked by boxing fans? ATG?...One of the longest and most remarkable carreers in boxing? KO record? I think he even managed to fight a very young Muhammed Ali?
So durable he's the only man to have fought BOTH Rocky Marciano and Muhammad Ali. Fought so many times he holds the record for the most knockouts. That good.
Indeed. Archie Moore isn't one that comes to mind when talking of durability, but what about over the long haul? He might just be the most tested, most punished and most seasoned of all the greats. How does a man suffer beatings by Jimmy Bivins, Charley Burley, Eddie Booker, Rocky Marciano and Ezzard Charles, along with a hundred and seventy other fights in between, and then, putting that all behind him and entering his forties, regularly drain himself to defend his light heavyweight title? After all this, how deep did Moore have to dig to excavate and summon the energy to come back from such a devastating first round against a bullish, younger contender and win by knockout? Incredible fighter in every respect. Moore was boxing.
His longevity and sheer amount of time near the top are indeed incredible, but when one factors in his ridiculous resume it defies description. One of a kind i'd say.
Moore and Sam Langford are in a league of their own when it comes to experience. Deciding between those two is pointless, although I lean towards Moore.
Moore fought men who defeated champions from the twenties (Yarosz-who defeated Pete Latzo) to the nineties (Ali-who defeated Foreman).
Excellent but overrated. If you talk P4P then make him the same size as the following because he loses to them all (in no specific order): Robinson Charles Ali Whitaker Marciano Leonard Hagler RJJ Holyfield Duran Mayweather Tyson Pryor Hearns Louis Greb Dempsey Sanchez Frazier Langford Pepp M SPinks Jack Johnson Armstrong Moore is rated so high on longevity, not on his top level quality which is very good but not the best
Just watch the Ali fight, 7 years 3 months after Moore/Marciano and with a 36-2-2 record after the Marciano fight leading to Ali, and Ali the greatest got hit often by Moore...before the Marciano fight he had a 46 1-1 bout streak only losing to Harold Johnson by a close decision and beating Johnson 3 times after the last by a TKO, also beat Nino Valdes 2 times and KO'd Bob Baker both #1 heavy contenders and he beat some very good heavyweights along with lightheavyweight Champs
I consider him one of the top 15 of all time, pound-for-pound, and possibly the #1 light heavyweight of all time.
