They always knew how to beat him....but they never did...did they? The "beatable" fighter went 49-0 43 KO's...

Archie Moore got that shot at Rocky because he understood how to create interest. He could sell himself, spin stories, create drama. Archie was a fascinating guy

Archie had good plan against Rocky, he just got overwhelmed. Maybe one or two years earlier, with quicker and more durable legs he could beat him. Especially because I think that Rocky was at his best against Moore, at least based on eye test.

Two men arguably beat him. The first twelve men on his record were dross.

So two out of over 40? All when he was inexperienced? Doesn't sound bad at all.

No, its an excellent record ,but with a lot of early filler on it. Marciano had 20 fights under his belt when he fought career journeyman Lowry, and 25 when he got the dec over Lastarza.
Joe Louis fought ex champ Carnera in his 20th fight and ex champ Schmeling in his 25th in between them he ko'd ex champ Max Baer.
Joe Frazier fought Buster Mathis for the NY version of the title in his 20th fight and Jimmy Ellis for the unified title in his 25th fight.

Sure, it was exception back then but today it's nothing unusual. Today most "champions" face worse competition than Marciano throughout their careers.

Anthony Joshua has faced 7 ranked contenders and he has just 23 fights on his record.
I'm just trying to put this 49/0 record into perspective because every Rocky fan mentions it, but they never add half of his opponents were dire.
His first 22 opponents had 144 losses between them.

Marciano needed more time to build himself due to his lack of any decent amateur career. AJ had a wonderful amateur career and was carefully guided from the beginning. Marciano didn't even have a trainer until his 5th pro fight

Nobody was more carefully guided than Marciano, he was fed a string of set ups ,3 of whom were debutees.

That comment is ignorant. Marciano was mismatched heavily from the beginning and lost amateur fights because of it. Marciano wasn't even managed by anybody other than himself until his fight with 15-0 Eddie Ross, in which Goldman and Weill finally took charge of him and THEN made him fight low level fighters whilst he developed himself

Marciano was carefully managed but that was only after his amateur career and a few pro fights

All of that being said I don't want to make this thread about Marciano so I won't be responding after this comment

Don't forget about the murderer's row of guys he fought 30+ fights into his career:
    • Keene Simmons (8-8-1; had lost 7 of his last 10 fights),
    • Harold Mitchell (4-14-3; a 4-round fighter who has lost his last 7 fights),
    • Art Henri (13-15-1; knocked out in 5th round by Freddie Beshore a month earlier, lost 5 of his last 6)
    • Willis Applegate (11-14-2; 1 win in his last 11 fights),
