Both don't understand that starting late in boxing + less amateur experience requires that you fight some "bums" because you need alot of experience and work out technical issues in a short time frame (Wilder and Marciano)

Interesting hearing the old mongoose break things down. First time I heard someone say the uppercut was a "defensive" weapon and that it's the only punch you throw with the weight on the right leg.

Can someone explain the whole "left cross" thing?

A straight left has more torque and power than a jab, you step into it also. Sometimes it also has a shoulder whirl

Back in the old days it was simply a jab, before the jab transitioned to a more point style grazing punch than an actual knockout blow.

Dempsey goes in depth about the change in jabs in "championship fighting"

Archie would throw a left cross off rotation from his cross-arm style sometimes. I figure he was referring to that. Feet set orthodox but left shoulder rotates back on the punching axis.

See Simon Brown/Terry Norris 1. Mr.Brown showcases it visually. I believe they called it a shotgun jab.
