I think Ruddock was quite a bit a better boxer than Williams, watch him boxing before he fell in love with his own power. He also defeated much better opposition, Weaver, Broad, Dokes, Page, Smithto name a few. But it's only my opinion. I lump them together for comparison because their both more noted for two losses to elite fighters than any win they had.

We would have literally watch a # of Williams key fights to get a gauge of what he had and what held him back from the very top. I dont doubt he could hit but not sure if it on the level of the elite names. Shavers, Liston, Weaver, Foreman, CandyA$$ McDaniels.
There are so many variables in boxing that affect the outcome of a fight. I would think that at some point he would have caught a top level guy clean and slept him. That could be misleading it though. Maybe he made some of his rep in sparring. Some boxers don't do well when the lights are on. They can relax and fight better in the gym.

The great Joe Frazier was a prideful, stubborn guy but he Joe didnt lie. He made a point to talk about Cleveland Williams power in 1971 after he felt him.
Sonny Liston and Joe Frazier both said he had dynamite. On the other hand Liston and Frazier were two Chatty Kathy's who like to make up stuff to get attention for tbemselves..what do they know about punching power?

Moore, either by clear decision or stoppage. No way that Williams would beat 1951 Archie.

Yea maybe he didnt carry his power over the course of a fight as well. Just speculating, though many fighters can bang when they are fresh.

Moore. He picks him apart. His counters are too sharp and he's too quick.

He was the biggest puncher that never could score a knockout when he stepped up but as i acknowledge there may have been other weaknesses or circumstances. Short notice, poor management, getting shot, bad luck.

This Williams conundrum isn't that difficult at all. He obviously hit hard, VERY HARD, all these testimonies can't be incorrect. He hadn't the elite skill-set needed to connect properly on the best fighters he met. Furthermore, he was naturally avoided because of his punching power, especially by forward coming aggressive fighters. Liston suited him perfectly, unfortunately for him, he suited Sonny more so. I can't see Williams getting lucky with any top class boxer.

Good stuff in here. I enjoy reading these Heavyweight and/or turn of the century threads even though I’m not an avid follower of either. I would’ve thought Williams would be favored before actually tuning into this discussion. I thought he was higher regarded.

    Just excuses!
Firstly he was 21 and he had 32 pro fights before that!He beat Sylvester Jones and Simmons so he was enough experience!
And Satterfield was past prime blown MW who went to fight at LHw...he was beaten in 3 rounds by Moore,Lyne,Charles....even LaMotta stopped him in 7 rounds!
Cleveland was not inexperienced and Satterfield was nothing more than glass jaw LHW who sucked at LHW/HW like Foster!
