I don’t see Archie lasting very long. His prime is at 175. As great as he was I don’t think his chin is up to the task. Dempsey is fast, mean and mobile. He is not easy to hit in his crouch and if they start exchanging it is clear that Dempsey is the harder puncher and the better catcher. If Dempsey comes out to kill...he may take some hard counters that get his attention but once he starts landing I think he taste blood and keeps the pressure on.
Hey 70s Your response reads as if there is no question and this a settled issue...but without a detailed reason you leave me to assume what you mean or just simply take your word for it. Even if I agreed with you I would be sure why you came to that conclusion. Do you mind giving a bit more to why you say that?
Sure, I think that Moore was much better at setting up his punches. Dempsey was a great puncher on his own, but sometimes he was very wild and didn't try to set up anything. Meanwhile Moore was one of the smartest fighters ever and he used every single punch on a purpose. You can see that he was always thinking during exchanges - how his opponent reacts, when to take advantage of oppenings, how to use a jab to land a hard right. Of course, some may disagree with me but that's why I view Moore as better puncher, even if not more powerful. Because of his ring IQ and ability to adapt, he knocked out some of the best fighters in the world. Dempsey had his moments of excellence in similar way (Tunney KD is just beautiful) but most of the time he tried to overwhelm his opponent instead of outthink him.
Oh ya, ig heavies were smaller back then. I would still have to pick Dempsey, bitterly. Dempsey beat big guys like Willard and Firpo though (with ease, I should note). Moore would definitely give a great account of himself though. Dempsey never fought anyone in the same world of tactical genius as Moore.
Gibbons was inside against Dempsey for the majority of the fight. Gibbons' punch resistance wasn't much tested at heavyweight, or against a "diverse" set of fighters, so tho Moore has some KO losses, I think it is fair to say that he faced more punchers and harder punchers... by a long shot.
Gibbons held on for dear life out of fear he would get battered by Dempsey. Great performance by Jack. Jack grinds Moore down for the stoppage victory
Archie has the power to put Jack down, but not sure he would find the right punches to keep him down. Archie was a heavy when older and Moore was at his best as a light heavy even back when heavies were generally smaller. Marciano fought Moore and he just had a little too much power and workrate for Archie wearing him down even though Archie was dangerous all the way. Prime Jack was likely a harder puncher than Archie and he'll do damage up close. Moore is a threat in this though so I'd take a motivated Jack to know this and successfully stop him at some stage in a good fight.
My initial thought was yours but Jacks lack of punching out put (threw far less punches a round then Marciano) would do him in. Not sure he would figure out Archies defense. Slightly favor Archie though not confidant about it
