Archie Moore was 6" 185-190 lbs, James Toney is 5'9 208-238 (not always best conditioned. His best weight was for Evander under 210. I still think he could have been better trained.

I think Archie is craftier, better boxer, Hits Harder and had way more experience and better condition

    Who was better

    Who wins and why

Interesting fight. A mirror fight in a sense. I imagine most will be picking Moore.

Archie Moore by decision, and i don't think it's all that hard to pick. Moore's workrate, skill level and experience would see him winning more rounds than Toney. I was never really that impressed with Toney at heavyweight; his record is 1-1-1-1 against ranked heavyweights, the sole win coming over an old Holyfield.

At cruiserweight he had a life and death struggle with Jirov. I think Moore can do a little better than that. There is no doubt about Toney's toughness and he does possess excellent skill, but i think many tend to overlook that while he dodges many punches, he also takes a lot of punches. And his low workrate makes it difficult for him to win rounds decisively, which is why his record is filled with close fights.

Archie's record at heavyweight is right around 70-3-1. His record against men above 200lb is 22-1 with 19 knockouts.

I'd say that Moore plain outworks Toney. Ideally I'd put the 190 lb Toney who fought Jirov to fight the 185-190 lb Moore who regularly fought at heavyweight.

Absolutely Archie ... Toney was tough as nails, great on defense with a great chin .. he was more durable than Moore but Archie was fast, a much harder hitter, threw more punches , was better conditioned and could take Toney's punches .. Archiw would outfight him and win a pretty clean decision in my book.

A NO brainer,,Archie Moore would have licked James Toney at their bests 7 days a week...James Toney was as a middleweight ,a smart crafty boxer...As a light heavyweight, I can NAME many of Moore's tough opponents that would surely beat Toney at equal weights...Just a few Lloyd Marshall,Jimmy Bivins,Holman Williams, Curtis Sheppard,Joey Maxim, Harold Johnson,Nino Valdez, Bob Satterfield, and others in that rich laden era...Old Archie, was as crafty as Toney and hit TWICE as hard as Toney... Archie by unaminous dec. or late stoppage, over Toney ,175-200 pounds...

vassily jirov at that weight also outworked toney. but who won the fight ?
although the scorecards were ridiculously in toney's favor than they should have been. a close fight and i think jirov could have gotten a knockdown when the ref disturbed him when he wobbled toney because the ref thought it was a slip but still , i do not think anyone will say jirov won it decisively .
but if jirov would not have been disturbed in his moment of success , who knows what would have happened .
