Let's say Robinson and Maxim is held under better circumstances (i.e with a nice breeze ) and Robinson takes the LHW title, Robinson fights Moore in his next fight....how does it go? I say Moore takes a decision. Robinson still did a lot after the Maxim fight at MW (lost to and then sparked Gene Fullmer, and of course his two battles with Basilio) so was by no means finished, I genuinely think the climate had a lot to do with his losing that fight (according to what I've read the referee had to pull out too) Although Basilio and Fullmer didn't have the size and power of Moore, they were durable ATG's who gave Robinson a lot of problems (personally I have Basillio winning their rematch) I'm not sure that I've seen the Maxim fight, I might have seen a wee bit of it, so might need some more knowledgable guys to tell me whether Ray looked like **** in it or not, but I'd assume that Robinson would be able to hold his own with The Old Mongoose???
I think Archie would win quite comfortably too...Its not outside the realm of possibility that he could stop Ray, as Archie was a much better fighter than Joey. He also hit a lot harder and had a better offensive ability. I would say the ringcraft of Ray gets him through to the final bell...But he would eat some fierce from Moore at some point and probably spend to rest of the night in a daze trying to avoid it from happening again. Something like 10-5 to Moore I see happening...but Archie is a man who could stop Ray, as he is true great himself, with truly great punching power and the much bigger man to boot.
i agree that ol' archie would have easily outpoint sugar ray.they didn't call moore the ol' mongoose for nothing. what could moore have done in those days without the handcuffs on and not getting a title shot when you deserve it ??
While Ray was handily outpointing Maxim ,Joey had zero power ,Moore was an atg puncher ,and would have been a bridge too far for Ray,imo Late stoppage or convincing win by dec .
Knowing that Moore was coming up, I suspect Ray intended Maxim to be his last bout, win or lose. He wanted no part of the Mongoose, a far deadlier puncher than Maxim. However, if Robby had won that title and then chose to defend it, I think his toughness and mobility would have carried him through to the final bell. It would be in Moore's favor all the way through though. 10-5 in rounds seems about right.
Actually Robinson thought seriously about a fight with Moore ,and had him and his Wife round to dinner to discuss it ,but they couldn't agree on terms,Archie said Ray wanted ,not only all the cake ,but the plate as well.
Too much weight against a great fighter...Ray is out of his depth here. There was talk about a Robinson/Moore fight in the late fifties, Robinson wanted the fight and all the money too. If Robinson saw something stylistically, I have not idea what it could be against the larger, powerful, and also very skilled, Archie Moore. Moore by decision.
Moore and Robinson got round the table to discuss this after Moore beat Maxim. Moore was saying he wanted 50% of the purse, Robinson said 20-30% or leave, Moore asked his wife to get his coat.
As for the fight Robinson sticks and moves/runs for the first 10rounds and then slows andMoore starts to connect and stops him, but Robinson may well pull off the impossible too, especially straight after Maxim when he was nearer prime
