This is both sad and fun to watch. While we get to see the oldest film by far of Moore, and very clear at that, it is extremely short, but leaves us wishing there was moore (get it?) Enjoy what is there: This content is protected Verdict: Honestly, this is so short it is impossible to make a judgment on it, but it is great to see Moore. He seemed more upright and a lot bouncier here. I guess this was before the ulcer though. I've read up on Moore a lot, but don't recall off the top of my head, did he adopt the cross-arm defense largely after the ulcer? I mean, it makes a lot of sense actually.
Although short and old decent quality. You can see hints of how athletic he was in the Davidson fight too. But looks like a completely different fighter. Nice post! Thanks for sharing
Excellent vid. I enjoyed seeing Moore so young and quick. Definitely hadn't developed his skills or his style yet though. I think by this point it was likely be was relying on his incredible talent.
Really interesting. You can't be sure with such little footage, but his defence doesn't look as good at all as it was later in his career.
I've put those Aussie footage links up a good few times over the years, and one just the other day... in fact I'm sure thats the same footage from the other day. I have NO Idea now where the Original Site these fights come from is anymore, but there are dozens of 30s & 40s Fight Filmed in Auz... and people here will remember I always cite this footage as among the Best Old Footage PROVING these fighters fought exactly like today, except they were doing it 200 times in 15 & 20 year Careers - No comparison, No argument, it's there clear to see. as I always state too, when the Footage is Right, the fighters are Right too, and there it is again, clear to see. maybe someone can find that Aussie Fight site link.
Thanks for posting. Great to see Archie Moore so early in his career. Even if only for a couple of minutes. His skills were still developing. It is interesting to compare Moore to Sugar Ray Robinson. Robinson was from the first a "star" fighting in the most prestigious venues. Moore generally fought in second or third string venues for most of his career. He had to become champion before getting booked into Madison Square Garden. He fought at the Garden only twice, and I think at Chicago Stadium only once. Odd for such a great fighter.
Yeah, I believe Archie fought mostly in Australia in the early to mid 40s, as he did against Richards.
