I have a friend that had his last pro fight in 1970. To this day, when he decides he needs to lose a few pounds, he does exactly that. His trainer was a guy that said he learned it from Moore.

Peter Wilson was with Moore in a London restaurant, Isows [ Archie was here to fight Pompey,] Moore was having weight problems.Moore ordered a huge steak rare ,sucked the juice out of it and spat the meat into a napkin, telling the waiter it was too tough. This brought the owner Jack Isow hot foot to the table ready for war it was then explained to him it was Archie's idea of a joke.
Wilson visited Marciano at 3 of his training camps eating with the champ ,he never mentioned him doing what Moore did.

You mean he heard it from Moore, not learned it from Moore.

Further proof that there's a sucker born every minute.

No, he said he learned it from him. His trainer had been around for years and claimed that Moore had taught him that to cut weight. How true that is, I have no way to verify. I do know that when that man was convicted of federal drug charges years later, Ali wrote a letter to his judge on his behalf. So maybe he knew Archie Moore like he said he did.

Who, specifically, are you calling a sucker?

I'm skeptical of Bonavena having more 1 punch power than Marciano for this reason..... Walcott stated in his opinion, Marciano hit harder than Louis, punch for punch. If that's true, then if what Goldman is saying was true, that'd make Bonavena a harder puncher than Joe Louis, which I just don't see.

During the post fight interview after defeating Frazier, he said that it was Louis who told him to use the uppercut, because that's what he (Louis) would have done if he were fighting Frazier.

There's also a sparring partner of Louis and Marciano who stated Marciano hit harder, if it means anything

Walcott fought Louis in 1947 and in 1948 when Louis was pretty much shot. Joe's reflexes and timing were long gone and he couldn't even slip punches anymore. The Joe Louis from 1942 was never coming back due to Louis fighting in too many army exhibitions and letting his weight balloon up. Joe also had a bad right shoulder from playing to much golf, which limited his straight right and cross. This is why Louis pawed his right hand rather punching with power in the late 40's and 50's.

He hits harder than Marciano did,” said Goldman. The Rock hit hard enough to retire in 1956 as the undefeated heavyweight champion.

Marciano always had power, but what really made Marciano dangerous was his punch volume that Bonavena never had. Moore and plenty of fighters were able to absorb individual shots from Marciano, however the problem was Marciano would stop and eventually his opponent would succumb.

Bonavena easily put Frazier down twice with one blow, but didn't have the conditioning or punch volume to finish Frazier off. Bonavena's poor conditioning and lack of punch volume also cost him against Ali.

In another interview in an old sports illustrated magazine I have somewhere in my garage Goldman names a number of fighters that had more one punch power than Marciano. The two that I remember off the top of my head were Bonavena and Johansson. Goldman also mentions that neither were half the fighter Marciano was, since Bonavena hated doing road work and wouldn't even take instructions from Marciano himself and that Johansson was one dimensional.

Walcott didnt fight a prime Louis. He may have sparred with him but I dont think Louis was one to go all out in sparring

As much as I love Archie as a character I don't think you can believe a word he says. He answers the same questions differently every time he's asked. Even simple ones like "How old are you?" or "Where were you born."

I feel like that statement was more just to hype Bonavena up, they were saying Marciano hit harder than Dempsey on Marciano's rise too

That was the best thing I ever heard Archie claim he did- unbelievably a fair few boxers brought into this practice.

Sometimes Archie is doing like a routine. He was an interesting guy. I wouldn't be sure with him..
