Are all boring fights only meant for the real sweet science fans?

Chiming in for the first time on this forum.:hi:

As a student of boxing {I currently train in my home gym five days a week} have boxed on and off all my life and I watch boxing matches every chance I get.

I intrepret "The Sweet Science" as the execution of boxing technique at the higest level. That entailes dominating your opponent in a way that is pleasing to both the hard-core fan and the novice.

It seems the Hard-core fan appreciates the demonstration of boxing skill at a high level more than the novice, who appreciates witnessing someone getting KTFO more. Its not to say that someone getting KTFO isn't satisfying to the Hard-core fan, but they have a better understanding of boxing to appreciate both. While at the same time the novice is there to witness the gladiator sport in all its cruelness .. i.e. the excitement factor.

Many fighters today that have the skillset to demonstrate "The Sweet Science" seem to forget HOW to please both the Hardcore & the novice fan.

And that is where the issues start!!!!

The solution to pleasing both the Hardcore & novice at the same time is to demonstrate the skillset that makes you a P4P great and then at some point bang your opponent into oblivion.

But again, some forget that they're not just there in the ring for themselves -- but also, for the many who paid their hard earned paper to watch.

I have no problem watching a fighter show-off the skillset they worked hard to develop ...... But take it to the next level and finish your opponent off after you've dominated him.

That's The Sweet Science in its purest form ..... IMHO

Like many sports, the instance right now thinking of many today has killed skill levels and techincal knowledge. In the NBA the free throw shoting use to be much higher, but they dont show free throws on sportscenter so no one works on it.

Too many so-called boxing fans want to see what amounts to a bar fight, two guys sticking thier chins out and throwing wide shots until one falls, that isnt boxing. In the record judges are still suppose to award rounds based on punching, generalship and DEFENCE, not how well you take punches but how well you get out the way of them.

Sugar Ray leanord was a boxer and mover and yet he was exciting and would pole axe youre ass if you were not careful....today the slap and run has become an art, like the jab and cover.

the sport is based on combat not survival. the conquering of the opposing threat not the avoidance of annihilation. i laugh when i hear someone say its all about hitting and not being hit. that is the best path to the objective but not the only path. anyone who says a defense first boxer is the best fighter is only saying this to defend a fighter. as someone allready pointed out, this is prizefighting and those putting up the prize are the ones who have the last word on who deserves it. most fans pay to watch a fight not a lesson in avoiding pain.

Most sports fans care very little about the sport itself and they just want action. Some people appreciate the level of skill. Nothing wrong with either from a fans perspective especially if you don't mind the fact that the unskilled fighter you root for will inevitably lose to a more skilled one

thats more like it...not just hit and dont get hit...but dont run and run and hug and hug..otherwise lets call boxing now as plain sweet science...the ultimate object of the sport is to knock your opponent down or out before he does it to you. thats where the excitement is where novice want to see ....hit and dont get hit will kill boxing...leave it to the expert.

The entire point of the sport is to punch someone in the face and score a ko. If every single boxer fought defensively, no one would even bother watching it.

People act like defensive boxers are all about the “sweet science” but disregard the fact that it also takes an insane amount of skill to be a good offensive fighter. Guys like Duran and Robinson were so great because they knew how to systematically beat their opponents up as much as possible.
