not singling anyone out, nor trying to take away from wholesome discussion, BUT some of these repeated and rediculous match ups are a waste of time, aren't they? for me it's always has, and always will be a simple conclusion. I don't put my full weight on ratings persay (though a good measure), nor do I argue against proven better Eras, one over the other, and likewise True Top men versus' Top men from lighter divisions, the Bigger fella is usually going to win and win well. it becomes, for me at least a rediculous waste of time, some of the considerations. But also, that it ends up becoming unrealistic 'fact' in the minds of some that so & so, can beat or will beat, or is better than so & so... No their NOT, and many of these discussions, I think minumize, the greatness of some and overstep the validity of others!
Yeah, I think people like the fantasy match-ups because they can't be proved wrong, and they can act like real experts. Some insist that they "KNOW" who would win. When it comes to real current match-ups or future fights, we are all proved to be mere mortals in this winner picking game. Some guy who told you that Haye will KO Wlad, or that Manny Pacquiao can't beat Cotto, will come on the next day and call you an "idiot" because you pick Joe Louis to beat Sonny Liston.
Don't tell me you're above such moments of ego and clarity A lot of people definitely take their fantasy fight picks far too seriously though.Usually in those 20 page Heavyweight threads.Just a chance to prop up favourites for some i guess, but hypothetical debates are all part of the inherent fun of the sport imo, especially if youre willing to use them as a benchmark for actual discussion on the fighters.Though it's every boxing fan's right to totally delude themselves as well i guess.
Nothing wrong with it as long as you don't take it too seriously. I've done well enough in picking recent fights so as not to completely embarrass myself which has added some confidence in my ability to pick a fight correctly. Basically it comes down to chance, very rarely should you outright favour a boxer over another unless you see it as a total mismatch. If you feel it's a close fight to call and get it wrong, that's not so bad compared to having 100% confidence in a fighter who ends up being dominated. In that case, you have to question whether you're an objective viewer with an understanding of the sport or just a "bandwagoner". As for fantasy fights, I've largely had it with the heavyweights, because there's very little to add to those discussions. The point to it is that you can highlight the technical skills and weaknesses of the boxers, discuss their comparative records and the style match-ups. I imagine there would be a lot of intriguing discussion about the proposed 168 lb tournament for example since many of those boxers are quite obscure and not everyone has knowledge on them.
