Are Iron Chins Really Made Of Iron Or Is It All An Illusion? I figured I'd do some numbers crunching and try to come up with a quasi-scientific answer to who has the best chin in Boxing. Obviously this isn't necessarily an exact science, the quality of opponents that the opponents KO isn't fully taken into account but the reality is most fighters work their way up the ranks by KOing their fair share of bums so everyone's KO rate is slightly inflated by a few glass jawed losers. But since these are some of their most recent opponents and most likely their best competition to date it its a pretty good reflection on their overall chin quality throughout their career. I'm not sure if some of the fighters who have the reputation of having an Iron Chin really deserve it or not you be the judge.

Obviously Froch has faced the biggest puncher's of the 4 GGG comes in second so they seem to have pretty Solid Chins.
However, Are Chavez and Ruslan's chins really that great since their opponents for the most part are kind of feather fisted.:think

    * AA's KO rate was around 80% when he fought Froch, obviously his power has diminished with age.
** Castillo's rate should obviously be questioned because isn't the old Castillo anymore.

who in the hell is Machio Fuchigama? Golovkin fought Makoto Fuchigami. turrible research, just turrible. but let's not throw out the baby with the bathwater. i think your data is practically useless otherwise.

a prime example: when "Jose Luis Castillo KO% 71.25" fought Provodnikov he was utterly washed up and so his high ko% doesn't say anything about Provo's chin.

Chavez Jr. chin is overrated as "#@. He has fought a handful of decent punchers way smaller than himself, and that's it.
Froch is certified titanium jawed. One of the absolute best among current fighters.

It's hard to rate the chin properly when the guy is dominating as bad as GGG is. When opponents are constantly pushed as hard on the back foot like he does to them, what comes back usually isn't very telling of the jaw situation.

I'm Gung Ho 100% GGG when he's fighting every Middleweight except for Lemieux and Khytrov then its 50/50 for both, and if its Froch, then GGG gets 0% support from me.:conf If its Ward I'm back to 100%.:good

What an utter waste of time, trying to prove/disprove a subjective interpretation of a physical attribute without even having a fundamental understanding of statistical ****ysis.

Leave the scientific inquiry to actual scientists.

I said it wasn't an exact science, and already pointed out most of what you said in the OP, but its as good as just speculating like most of you guys do. The fact is Froch has fought the hardest punchers statistically speaking and his chin has held up pretty well, GGG is decent to solid, and Julio's chin has only been tested recently and its good and Ruslan on the other hand has fought light hitting guys so it really still a huge question mark isn't it..

A lot of the "iron chin" comes from the least likely source: the jump rope. Gotta be well conditioned to defend yourself effectively. And if you're not taking punches, you're not getting KOed. That's sort of why it's next to impossible to accurately assess who can endure the most damage. Not to mention the more damage one takes, the less ability one has to endure damage later on.

Lemieux and Khytrov may have comparable power to Triple G but they'd get their ears boxed off, as would Froch. Ward would be interesting but i don't think it would end well for him either.

Same thing with people who try to say a fighter doesn't have a glass chin because he was hit on the temple or somewhere else. "Chin" doesn't refer to a fighter's actual chin, it refers to their general punch resistance.
