Are Catholic boxers born in Belfast considered Irish/Northern Irish

What do you take us for? **** all are living in the past over here anymore, living in the past is a thing of the past. It's not the 60's/70's anymore, this bull**** isn't even on most of our radars in our normal day to day living.

 

It's very easy for people who do not have a notion about the history of Northern Ireland to say, "oh just forget about it, move on, it's in the past". Well sorry lads but for a lot of people it's not that simple. People from the outside looking in have no right to be chiming in with their two cents especially when they are totally clueless about the situation.
Just a suggestion to a few posters who have posted in this thread, nutjob being a good example, if you don't have any knowledge of the subject at hand kindly **** off this thread as you have nothing constructive to add. :good

 

it's a very understandable question and thankfully boxing is one of the sports in ireland that isn't divided along religious or political lines. the amateur game is run by the IABA (Irish Amateur Boxing Association), there are no seperate governing bodies for the north or the south. there are six provincial championships - leinster, munster, ulster, connaught and dublin and antrim (inclusive of belfast city). the last two have their own championships due to their population size but boxers from dublin and antrim are eligible to contest in leinster and ulster championships respectively.

when amateur fighters from ireland contest at international level they fight for ireland irrespective of their religion. for instance wayne mccullough is protestant but he fought for ireland in two olympic games. fighters from northern ireland are elgible to fight in the commonwealth games due to the north being part of the UK so you have a situation were catholics like tommy mccarthy and paddy barnes fight for northern ireland. in this instance the fighters are classified as northern ireland and not ireland but its the only incident i'm aware of were the differentiation is made. ironically barry mcguigan is actually from the south but also fought for northern ireland in the commonwealth games, i'm not sure how he was eligible to do this but i'd imagine the application form may have been completed creatively!

in the professional game fighters are also generally recognised as being "irish" and they can all fight for irish titles (governed by Boxing Union of Ireland BUI- all Ireland body) however fighters from the north are also eligible to fight for british and commonwealth titles so you can have a situation were you have a northern protestant holding an irish professional title and a northern catholic holding a british title.

strangely enough boxrec refuses to recognise john duddy as being irish and recordes his nationality as british due to northern ireland being part of the UK. this kind of nit picking has very little impact at a practical level and thankfully most fighters get great support no matter were they are from or what their religion. i'm a catholic from the south but i've always supported any irish fighter who's fighting and its the same for most people. wayne mccullough has been a great servant to irish boxing and hopefully carl frampton will go on to get us a world title.

similarily, i would imagine that in britian there is a mutual respect among real boxing people for everyone involved in the sport whether they are white, black or asian...

 

John Duddy is recognised as irish now by boxrec. I dont know how they done it but they did.

Mcguigan was British champion too and an Irish catholic I think .

 

Not the only one from the south either .michael gomez and john mccormack aswel. hopefully john o'donnell in the near future

For other peoples information I am a protestant from Belfast but was very proud to represent Ireland and wear the green vest and equally as proud to represent northern Ireland

the monkstown club turn out good fighter like steven ward silver medalist commonwealth games... theres cain lodge as u mentioned already... albert foundry and eastside club... midlands and white city... scorpion from ballymoney .... larne abc... sandy row from south belfast... these clubs turn out good protesant fighters at all the am championships:good
