Are fighters who shared the ring with an all time great in a blow out defeat happy for the opportunity or regretting they took the fight? Money aside, how do they feel 10- 20 years after they retired? You might end up on someone elses high lite reel. Then again, you can say you were part of boxing history. If you were Marvis Frazier, are you glad you took the fight with Tyson?
I'm trained by a fighter who lost to Oscar De La Hoya in 2 early in Oscar's career. I never asked his precisely how he feels about it, but he's definitely proud to have been in the ring with fighters such as De La Hoya and other world titlists. He jokes about it too, about being on the negative end of a ESPN classic highlight reel.
I think that should depend on how thier legacy turns out. Marvis Frazier may feel happy to have shared the ring with Mike Tyson and Larry Holmes despite the losses. But I dont think Joe Frazier would share that sentiment regarding the Foreman fight because he is a legend in his own right. So is Micheal Spinks for that matter. Ultimately I think the better you do the harder it is to swallow a blow out loss.
Depends if your an ATG, or a champion or not. I doubt Shavers is happy he lost to Ali and Holmes, but I bet Cobb is plenty happy he was in the same ring as Larry. Or I bet Mancini isn't happy about losing to Arguello. It probably depends on your status at the time, and overall.
I suspect Shavers is happy to of shared the ring with them, perhaps he regrets what might of been, had he landed one more right hand, or got the benefit of the doubt from the judges.
