Few years ago we had very boring heavyweights as world champions. John Ruiz and and Chris Byrd. But think about todays heavyweight champs. Wlad and Chagaev are the most boring heavyweight champions ever.

Wlad - His 4 last fights have been boring as hell. (It is not really Wlad´s fault, his opponents just have not been competitive).

Chagaev - He has VERY safe style and he has NEVER been involved in a action packed fight! All of his fights have been boring.

Ibragimov - His only titlefight was the most boring fight of the millenium. (not really Sultans fault, he just did enogh to win the title).

Maskaev - The most exchiting heavyweight today, mostly becouse he has bad chin and power. I liked the Rahman fights, but othewise his fights are usually boring.

These guys have Eastern European stand up style... It might be right now the most effective style in the world... but... most of the fights suck!

The only ones I agree with you are Ibragimov's title fight and Maskaev's fights. That being said, I think most of the fault lays on Briggs for making that fight a snoozer.

Which fights of Chagaev have you watched? Even his fight with Ruiz was quite entertaining.

I also enjoyed quite a bit when Klitshko decapitated Byrd and Brock. The Austin fight was so short that there was not enough time to bore me. The Brewster fight definetly did not leave to its expectation. That being said, watching a HW throwing almost 500 punches over 6 rounds is still very impresive.

I thought Wlad's last couple of fights were pretty entertaining. One-sided, but enough action to stop them from being boring.

It was definently worse when it was Byrd, Ruiz, Brewster, and Vitali as champions.

Only Wlad truly employs this style. Chagaev and Ibragimov are both smaller, mobile fighters that are entertaining to watch. I think the division is actually fairly interesting at the moment.

i cannot really agree with you there. i felt the period straight after lewis vacated was the most boring. tho vitali gave us a few beat downs which were fun if you like seeing fighters get owned, the others were snoozers. remember byrd-williams? or ruiz fights?

wladimir is a little safety first but no more than floyd or roy jones was. and if you think they were boring because they were careful not to get hit then you simply dont like the sweet science and only prefer brawls with lots of haymakers. i love castillo-corrales and gatti-ward type fights but i still consider seeing someone like wladimir in action exciting in it's own way too.

and have you forgotten recent fights like brewster-lychkovich? or blast outs like wlad-austin? tyson used to blast out tomato cans too but that was more exciting than a guy who used one hand in the fight and finished it off with a quadruple left hook?

maybe it's just bias towards foreign fighters that make you think they are LESS exciting than byrd-williams or ruiz fights.

i am enjoying the heavyweight scene at the momnent.

watch the early 80`s scene and you had perhaps 4 or 5 fights at heavy in 5 years that were good

    dokes v weaver
    holmes v cooney
    holmes v an unknown witherspoon
    and a couple of others
but it was the era of fat out of shape, could not be bothered , do i really have to punch him heavys.

try watching greg page and tony tubbs go belly to belly for 15 rounds before critising this era to much.

it was rumored larry holmes fell asleep in his corner during rounds in half his fights he was so bored.

Toney, obvioulsy you havent seen a lot of Chagaev's fights, have you!

Chagaev vs Ruiz was a fairly entertaining fight.By the way Ruiz is American, and that fight was the first one with Ruiz which can be called fun to watch.

As for your laughable statement that most of the fights of the fighters of the former soviet union suck I strongly recommend you to go and buy a tape Vladimir Virchis vs Taras Bidenko.'Bidenko vs Virchis was the most exciting and dramatic heavy weight fight I have seen within the last couple of years.
Lyakhovich vs Brewster was a fun to watch ,too.
The second part of your last statement was quite funny, too.
"The Eastern European standup style might be right now the most effective style out there"
Righ now,eh! Russia, and the countries of the former soviet union together with Cuba have been dominating amateur boxing for ages. The American fighters are dwarfs compared with their Russian counterparts.
As for the paid ranks Russian and Cuban fighters havent been able to dominate the pro business for various reasons.
1.during comunism no soviet or cuban fighter was allowed to fight as a pro
2.at present the horrible lack of capital and the lack of tv money doesnt provide the opportunity for legions of talented fighters from the countries of the former soviet union to turn pro
3.Cuba is still a huge prison for its countless talented fighters

And by the way eastern european fighters and fighters from the soviet union are two different cup of teas.
I know that a lot of posters from europe call fighters like Chagaev or the Klitschko brothers eastern european.
However,as we all know this is just ridiculous.
Poles,Czechs,Bulgarians,or Hungarians may be eastern europeans. This is certainly not true for Russian fighters,or fighters from other regions of the former soviet union.
In the russian language we even use the phrase "I travel to europe" to describe that we are going to travel to country like Germany,Poland,or England.
Sounds really alien to russian ears to call him an eastern european, mate!

So, in light of the other thread on here about anti-American sentiment..

What does this thread tell us?

HW is boring. Says who? The American?
Funny how that coincides with the fact that all American Heavies are being thrashed in the ring of late, isn't it?

Same goes for 168. A great division to follow - if you're not American - because then it's lacking in talent and a boring division. Again, no Americans are at the top and the ones that have been near it have been taken out like club fighters.

This is exactly why anti American sentiment is prevailing on this board.

more boring........thats a good question. I dont think so, maybe alittle more boring, but the huge difference isnt the talent level. These guys today suck.

The heavey wight scene is pretty good with highly talented fighters.

Vlad has just been too dominant.

Chageav and Sultan are very capable and have been in decent fights.

Makeav is cool and should offer an entertaining fight next.

The problem is that the poor state of American heavies means that European fighters keep having to fight joke opposition.
