and he still lost the fight easily, besides the knock downs.. which were not very good anyhow, he lost every round of that fight, he will not be able to knock Vitaly around like that.

I wouldn't call it boring, because i won't miss any of the fights i can catch. Wlad is almost too damn good for his own good (it's almost like from a business perspective he should let the other guy do a little something). But aside from the belt holders currently we do have a bunch of guys that don't seem to care to stay in top shape anymore (too many to name) and some others are just trying to be too damn big to even move (Briggs). The cruisers are looking like what the "exciting" heavies I imagine we like to remember as exciting (Haye, Ding, etc.. guys coming in without fat hanging off and ready to give plenty of action). It seems IMO that most of the Heavies we think of as exciting never weighed more than 220- 240.

I do find it amazing when guys come to big fights and show up out of shape.Briggs is a different storey, he's in the wrong kind of shape, but James Toney, Kirk Johnson, Danny Williams...to name a few

This is the best the division has been in years.

Both Klitschko brothers, a still-hanging-in Maskaev, the guy who finally rid the boxing world of Shannon Briggs (S. Ibragimov), Lyakhovich, Valuev, Chagaev (depending on how he can treat his illness), Potvenkin, an over-rated-but-still-entertaining Sam Peter. And that doesn't even take into account the old timers: Tuaman; Oliver McCall - the guy who first, 'officially,' busted Lennox's chin; and, of course, the 44-year-old who will be trying to win his 5th HW title.

I'm pumped. There is a ton of talent in the division today, and I barely even touched on any American prospects. Finally we may be able to return to some of the glory of the early 1990's which has been missing ever since Sir "

was ducking fighters like Sanders and Byrd and waltzing with guys who had 15-inch reach disadvantages, as did David Tua.

Happy days are almost here again. Woo-hoo!!

I agree, but as long as the Don King's of the world and the heads of the governing bodies are the way they are, having a unified champ is going to be very, very difficult. It's just not worth fighting a guy for a belt sometimes when you have to give Electric Hair options on 2 of your next fights.

I wish McCain or someone could get some national legislation passed on boxing. Oh, well. At least the HW division is big-time on the rise right now. I'm actually very excited for both Peter-Maskaev and Holyfiel-Ibragimov

    I couldn't agree more.:thumbsup

People who think Briggs vs Ibragimov was bad should watch Spinks-Holmes.

Then there was Spinks fighting the legendary Steffen Tengstadt and Anders Eklund, guys more fit for Olympus than Canastota.:bart

The heavys around today IMO are better than many other eras. The only epoch of big men that was definitely better was the late 60s and early 70s.

Posters such as MexicanJew, Odo, Zuras, & others have pretty much covered this topic. It seems the person that started this thread has not seen many of the borefest HWT fights from the 80s, and indeed other eras including the overrated 70s. You can always find boring fights in any era and division. I think the current HWT era is one of the best. The boxing business & politics is even more complex now than it was in days gone by - which is a problem. But that's no reason to take it out on the current HWTs unless you have certain issues that more than few ESB posters have. To answer this thread -
NO, it's just as exiting as ever - no more or less !
Most of the top 90s to date HWTs would demolish most of the top small HWT to even CWT sized "heavies" of the 70s, 60s & earlier. I'll use 2 fighters as examples -Floyd Patterson & Jerry Quarry.

Both of these guys were about the same size, and were very good fighters. In their primes they were at or below 200#. Either man would have a good chance to be CWT champ today or at least have one of the belts. But at HWT  they could beat the C guys and maybe on a good nite the B fighters. Most top HWTs today would almost bounce Floyd or Jerry out of the ring or bust them up for a TKO. And you can talk about stamina all you want, it wouldn't even be an issue because Floyd or Jerry would not make it to the later rounds vs a Lewis, K bros, and others too. I would favor Valuev, Sultan, Chagaev, Peter & Maskaev over either of these top late 50s to mid 70s 195-200# HWTs. And I liked both fighters. Floyd was a true sportsman of a bygone era. Jerry came along a little later and may have been caught up a bit in the early days of "trash" talk. But can you imagine either man acting like some "gangsta" wannabe that many US fighters seem to think is sooo cooool? :-(

Stop hating, and get over it, guys from Eastern Europe (sorry Odo, but most people think of Russia, Ukraine, etc as East Euro) are at the top of the HWT division. There have been many exiting HWT fights this decade as others have noted. If I disliked a sport as much as some do here, I wouldn't waste my time posting on some board about it - unless I had too much time on my hands. :yep

If the heavyweight division isn't boring, which HW is exciting?

    You wanna re-think that question?

I believe during post-Homes, pre-Tyson era, the HW division scenario was very similar to today.
