I think he still has issues with guys below that level and would have a hard time beating many of them. Laguna, Rosario, Ramirez, Camacho, Nelson, Elorde, Jack, Ramos, Buchanan maybe even Mitchell and Villaflor...you get what I mean. If I guy like Vilomar Fernadez could upset Arguello, who holds all the physical advantages Chico does but is all around much better, and be such a nuisance to Duran, then I see him giving hell to Corrales. Im not talking average fighters there though...those guys were all superb fighters. But to say broadly he could defeat a lot of guys below the top tier in those divisions is a stretch IMO as much I loved Chico.
nah I disagree, I think he ktfo most of those guys. Any of those fighters on any given day can give any other fighter trouble, like you said that's not a list of bums, but I don't think any of those guys could stand and bang with Chico and imho Chico would have NO problems with a guy like Mitchell. He might have trouble landing clean but he wouldn't have any trouble getting the decision. Maybe pre-Rosario Camacho could just outbox him for 12 rounds without getting caught. There's room for legitimate disagreement, but ask yourself this: Had the PBF fight not happened, what would we be saying about Diego right now? I think we put too much weight on what happened in that fight and people don't remember what a monster Chico was before he got in trouble and went away.
Individually, maybe. But that fight sure isn't. What made that fight great was that it was truly for the undisputed Lightweight Championship of the world. It was nice to see both men walk through fire for their straps. Unfortunately, it was the last fight both men looked good.
Well Ricky Hatton said before his fight with Castillo that 'Jose is one of the best pound for pound fighters of all time'. Surely Hatton wouldn't take bollocks would he?
I think he would have went on to do what he ended up doing anyway...having the series with Casa and JLC..and punking Freitis. At the some point the weight would be to much like it ended up being..so he wouldnt have been around for the Morales-MAB-JMM-Pac raid on the divisions. Given his affiliation with Showtime its not out of the question a name like Tszyu would have come up..I dont think he could have won that fight, thats probably where the story ends. I really think you arent giving the names I have mentioned enough credit..No chance he knocks out guys like Laguna, Nelson and Buchanan let alone beats them..ktfo of them no way. There is a decent chance Camacho bitches it once he feels the power of Chico but there is just as real a chance he boxes his ears off as Corrales follows him around the ring. He isnt going to stop Ramirez in his tracks..bad matchup for him there. Chico was tearing it up but he didnt have the most awesome resume pre-Money, in fact he really did his best work after that..And he did show his flaws at times..The Brown and Garcia fights come to mind. As great as Mayweather is, and especially was at that weight, out of the ring issues or not Diego got so badly dominated in that fight it really showed the level of fighter he was...just not on that next tier where Floyd was. He was bloody good, one of my favorites as he was coming up and I was only pretty young at the time, but seriously saying he is greater or beating or as you put it ktfo of those greats is either selling them too short or giving Corrales undeserved props.
