Are judges placing too much emphasis on aggression?

Looking at the list of robberies and near robberies on the scorecards, it seems more than homecooking, they have one thing in common - the beneficiary was the aggressor and the counter-puncher was punished.

Ward - Froch was a near robbery, with two judges having the fight MUCH closer than it should have been. Froch was the aggressor for the vast majority of rounds, and it's amazing after that domination that if Ward had lost just ONE more round, we would have been looking at a majority draw.

Pacquiao - Marquez III was a clear robbery, with Pacquiao winning entirely on aggression.

Williams - Lara should have easily gone to Lara, but Williams' come forward style seemed to bamboozle the judges into awarding him the win.

There have been many others the past couple of years. It makes me wonder - are judges going too far in looking at aggression as a factor in determining who won the round? Has counter-punching fallen out of favor?

    Not enough in my opinion.

Boxing at the end of the day is a spectator sport. As much as winning is important, style matters too for the long term health of the sport. You can suck up all you like about appreciation of sweet science and what not but if the casual fan is turned off, it isn't going to do boxing any good.

I would say it is not much dissimilar to football. Mourinho was winning everything under the sun with negative football and although his style of football was spread across Europe, it quickly went outta fashion because crowd attendance dropped even tho teams were getting better result with it.

So for the health of boxing, if anything rules should be geared towards a more crowd pleasing form of boxing. Otherwise, I might as well go watch MMA with guys hugging and kissing each other on the floor doing nothing for minutes on end to appreciate sweet science.

I think judges at times fear that they may be out of work if they score against a promoters fighter, if that makes sense.

Yes they are, look at Pac JMM, also, Froch Ward, i mean how did they not all have it by 9-3 Ward of even more? (i had it 10-2)

  6. That's ridiculous to the point of being offensive. In those fights most of the aggression was not effective.

Its actually the thing thats pissing me off most in boxing.
People scoring ineffective aggression, boxers throwing tons of volume and only landing gloves or air.

Even though most educated viewers can see that Marquez CLEARLY beat Pac by 4 rounds, you still have the 15% or so of ******s that give it to Pac and as long as those idiots do not learn how to score boxing these robbies will keep happening and the promoters will keep on getting away with it.

Same with a Williams vs Lara, or to a lesser extent a Kotelnik vs Alexander.
And if the 2 refs that scored Ward vs Froch 115 - 113 were purely doing it on aggression they need to be suspended as well, **** like that is killing boxing.

Wasn't talking about any of the mentioned fights. I was just talking about why crowd pleasing form of boxing is important to the health of boxing.

As Maximus got told, you need to entertain the crowd. :D

lol I meant the fans don't really know how to score a fight. And they get swayed easily by the commentators.

True. The rule is EFFECTIVE aggression, not simply aggression.

Is it truly effective if all of your coming forward and wild swinging simply gets you punched in the face?

Effective aggression and ring generalship should be tie-breakers, not determinants.
