Consider the fact that Khan was huffing and puffing vs Maidana and barely survived, and Pacquiao is constantly blaming leg cramps on his bad performances even though Ariza is supposed to be this wiz of modern scientific sports medicine and fitness.

Whereas Mayweather is old school training and nutrition. Far as I know he doesnt have any special attachments to help with his training regimen.

So is all this stuff overrated. No doubt we know alot more about the human body. But is the advantage this stuff brings really matter. Guys back in the day could go 15 rounds 2 nights a week no problem if they had to. Whereas alot of these younger fighters gas going 12 fighting in pitty pat amateur styles.

On the other hand Pac did climb a bunch of weight classes and brutalize bigger opposition and Marquez conditioning coach is given credit for his performance against Pac at a much higher weight class then he was used to.

The old fighters fought so often that they were always within say 5 - 8 lbs of fighting weight . Todays fighters lose weight and lose nutriants to get down in weight . I always like the fighers like Floyd who look bigger in the ring than they do outside.

Also no matter what day of the year it is , what protein shakes are out there , what university you got your 'sports science' degree from. Running , bag work , skipping , and the fundamental boxing techniques must be taught correctly. I am afraid a lot of these are lost today.

For me the reason Manny got leg cramps in the ring is down to this swimming bull**** , do your runs and you will not get these.

For me fighters have all the advantages today , but you cannot beat hard hard work, yes science is important , but learn how to throw a jab , hook, straight right and slip a punch . Unless you do all of those all of the protein tablets in the world will not make you a champion.

Of course. What fighter throws more powerful punches than Joe Frazier or Rocky Marciano nowadays?

    Massively overrated.

People who are ignorant of the sport think that a boxer can sit in an oxygen chamber and suddenly become a better fighter for it. No. There are some things which help, yes, and there are some things past fighters did which are outdated. These things make very little difference though. There is no better training than sparring. As for nutrition, it makes very little difference.

The only significant change between then and now, is that fighters these days spend far too much time working on the physical element rather than becoming good, technically skilled boxers. People can argue that physically prowess has improved but as it improves, technical proficiency declines.

Since those undersized heavyweights there have been many that hit harder. No doubt they hit hard for their time though and were big men for there day and are great great fighters. Chuvalo said even Dejohn hit harder then Frazier by the way.

The Klitschkos, Lewis, Bowe, Tyson, Tua, Sanders, Rahman and many others hit harder imo.

Not talking punching power. Talking about throwing hard-punches non-stop for 15 rounds? Who can carry their power and punch at a MW pace like that? I'll wait.

The technical shortcomings are an entire other aspect (Important one, obviously). It's not like the conditioning has really improved massively with such modern advancements either. All the guys that eat right and trained the old school way are the pinnacle examples of stamina anyhow. Hagler, Frazier, Ali, Marciano, Chavez, etc.

What scientific advancements has done has allowed for athletes to better overcome and treat injuries and sustain their careers longer because of it (Vitali Klitschko).

Your right smaller fighters can fight at a higher pace. WHen it comes to endurance its always better to be smaller. Look at the top distance runners in the world they are all below 130 pounds.

Even though smaller boxers have better endurance its not enough for some reason to beat bigger boxers. It may have something to do with having to move a bigger man around the ring at times. Maybe its the lack of power.

I will believe its better to be smaller in the heavyweight division when I see it. So far most great heavyweights have been big during their time even little Marciano.

All the drugs 'n Ivan Drago methods of increasing stamina, don't hold a candle to a fighter blessed with Bjorn Borg's 34 resting heart beat.

Mayweather is a superior athlete compared to those two, and even more important he takes good care of himself.

anyone remember the emmanuel-Mosley photo shoot after their fight was announced? emmanuel came in flabby and chubby. He's rumored to sneak in alcohol during training camps according to some pacfags.

Amir is about 10 years younger than Floyd but plays celebrity way too much. Plenty of drinking and junk food.

All the running because of pressure was what made Amir tired in the Rene fight. You don't see many boxers run as much as Amir. He doesn't know the definition of economical.
