Are Modern Nutrition and Scientifically created Work Out Regimes Overrated?

    It's completely overrated. Old school fighters would eat most of these modern fighters alive based on better fundamental boxing and toughness.

    old school fighters used the same methods but they didn't have a name for it.

    strength, agility, interval training has been around forever.

    Give me a break. You think Frasier or Marciano would break a sweat touching up bums like Chisora or Mormeck? What about Huck or Povetkin? They would be amazed they were getting paid to take out garbage. The only threat to either champion would be K2.

    Extremley Overrated ! Thats why have the boxers today can't box they focus too much on strength and condtioning as opposed to techniques !

    It can be a bit harder to see it in boxing, but take a look at any sport in the categories of weightlifting, running, swimming or jumping and you will see that records have continually improved along with training methods. In fact, watch any football game of the 70'ies and the players look incredibly sluggish compared to todays top leagues.

    no one really knows Floyd's nutritional regimen. other than no alcohol and fried foods..

    imo they were using the 'swimming lesson' to minimize joint problems you get from running. but they're wrong. just likle ray said, basics first then training techniques then (insert modern training methods here), as long as the fighter never overtrains.

    and floyd has his nutrition guy right? It just happens that Ariza the nutritionist of Khan and Pac is under media and fan scrutiny that every mistake by the fighter makes MW thinks that modern nutrition are overrated. Cmon man, protein shakes are protein shakes. Supplements were still there.

    It comes into the trainor and the fighter when it comes to proper execution in the end.

    Sports science is not overrated. Be serious. You can increase oxygen uptake, lactose breakdown, recuperation, reflexes, etc etc etc - IF you do everything right.

    The problem is the (evidently) idiots who are getting hired by the top boxers. Who says they know what they're doing?

    For the most part, sports physiology research is not done with boxers, so it requires a very intelligent trainer to figure out how to apply it to boxing.

    You also have to NOT just throw out all the old, tried & true methods, but I suspect a lot of young trainers do just that, in their eagerness to prove that their methods have value.

    Depends on how much you go back.
    the farther you go back the more people had slow and sloppy flat flooted footwork.
    They were also hugging a lot each other and having their hands down the whole fight.
    That means they needed a lot less energy in their fights.

    Great point but i kinda agree with Michigan here. But Bernard Hopkins does have strength and condi. trainer. But i think instead of doing all such modern crazy stuff, it might be better to kinda just left weights and do simple excises like Squat, Benchpress and so on... if you see where i'm getting at :D

    But Nutrition is way to underrated, and a lot of fighters are realizing that nutrition and dieting is important.

    I think in boxing its more overrated than other sports, because there is an innate toughness and skill set that even an out of shape fat slob of a fighter like James Toney or old Roberto Duran can fall back on. Are you going to tell me James Toney has better modern conditioning methods than the always fit Sugar Ray robinson? Yet he was an ex fat middleweight competing with much much bigger heavies and often making it close.

    Too many intangibles in boxing to say that the fastest or strongest or quickest will win, when its clear that Baldomirs beat Judahs all the time, and Sanders beat Wlad.

    I think too much strength training has created fighters that actually fatigue more quickly - the 80s was the golden era of boxing - you very rarely saw hagler, leonard, pryor, or those guys tire despite the horrific beatings. Downhill since then, maybe because athletic people are attracted to other sports in general.
