Are modern white and asian champs under rated while black / brown over rated?

My intention here isn't to start a nasty hate filled thread so hopefully you can all follow my example and keep things respectful.

To me, it seems the idea of the Great White Hope thing has been flipped on its head. No matter what a modern day high profile white fighter does in the ring, it seems his weaknesses are focused on in the forums, where as, a black or brown fighter who is at or near the top of his game, seems to get his flaws overlooked more so and his abilities exaggerated.

This isn't to say white fighters are better than others. Its just to say that, for example, Vitali, Wlad, Pavlik, Calzaghe, Abraham, Kessler, Valuev, Chagaev, Karmazin when he was on a roll, seem to be picked apart far more than their counterparts like Hopkins, Miranda, Peter etc.

    Here are some examples.

Peter loses to Wlad. Nearly loses to McCline. Yet he still remains The Great Black Hope despite his deficiencies, and is trumped up as this great warrior. But as soon as he loses to Vitali, not only is all that talk before ignored, but numerous threads are made saying Vitali deserves ZERO credit for the victory.

Same thing with Miranda. For awhile there he was the new Big Scary Black Monster. Even after his close calls BEFORE the Pavlik match, it was thought he would destroy Pavlik. After words, The Great Black Hope damage control squad goes into full swing claiming it was a weight issue. The Hope is slowly rebuilt so much that he isn't a big fave vs Abraham, whree he gets squashed.

Jeff Lacy. This guy was elected The Great Black Hope off of a very iffy resume, and bought into his own hype. Calzaghe was considered to have little chance. Yet after Calzaghe wins, to this day, people spend their lives on the forums discrediting his career. Even after beating Kessler and Hopkins since.

Kassim Ouma. This guy was considered to be some sort of phenom even after losing to Karmazin. It was like the Karmazin fight didn't even happen and there he was right back in big fights on HBO with them telling us his admittedly heart wrenching tale.

Its not like people don't pick apart Jones' career and Hopkins career or Julio Cesar Chavez' career or Oscar's career. They do.

But what is silly to me is how people seem so eager to elect the New Black God of Boxing yet at the same time they have to take the most negative possible look at a white or asian fighter.

Even now, they tear down Calzaghe, Pavlik and Wlad and Vitali. Its ok to do that contructively, lord knows they all have their faults, but it seems that the same group, if these fighters were black or brown, would be going totally ape **** over there accomplishments.

Could you imagine if Pavlik was black? The guy would be in ten thousand sigs right now and be The New Black Scary Monster. The threads would be religious in their devotion and the trash talking would be huge. All his deficiencies would be overlooked, just as Jeff Lacy's were before he got his ass kicked.

Could you imagine if Pacquiao was Mexican? I would say at least 60% of the hate for him would dissappear on that fact alone. It would be replaced by fan boy race based hero worship. Instead of the hate threads we would get endless homage to The New Brown Boxing God.

Now its Chad Dawson. The New Black Hope. You get these idiotic threads asking if he should be considered pound for pound #1 RIGHT NOW. I thought he lost to Glen Johnson but had a great fight and clearly handled Tarver. But pound for pound #1? Adamek was another very solid win. Harding, Gardner, Mendoza, Daniels, Darnell Wilson, Jesus Ruiz nice names to have on your resume.

I think Chad Dawson is a very good fighter, but like all those white fighters above, he too has his weaknesses.

I concede that maybe its because I am white, so I am just seeing this whole thing through my white microscope. Probably some moron will simply highlight that last sentence rather than intelligently respond to my post. But in all the forums I visit, I see very little racial rationalization for white and asian fighters and a ton of it for brown and black. Now I can't say that the ones posting this are any particular color, but I just wanted to point this out.

It seems black and brown fighters that get on a roll are considered incredible category 5 terrors but dismissed as over the hill, over weight, or over rated AFTER they lose to a white or asian fighter, like Peter and Miranda lost to Vitali and Pavlik or all the excuses for every Mexican that ever lost to Pacquiao, you could fill a book.

But white and asain fighters that get on a roll, the focus is never on how great they are doing, but how they are sure to lose and how it will of course come crumbling down so soon, its all a mirage all a myth.

Just think about it. If Pavlik and Pacquaio and Calzaghe and Wlad were all black and brown would they get this kind of hate?

I mean, even if every white and asian fighter gets blown to pieces in their next fight, it wouldn't take away what they already accomplished.

I know there are fighters like Gatti. Who made a ton of money for HBO and had a huge fan base, and fought with a ton of heart, but the guy wasn't a truly great fighter. You can look at a guy like Emmanuel Augustus, and say, he could have had a great career like Gatti if he played his hand out differently, or caught a couple of breaks, or........was white with the same crazy attitude and skill set.
But Gatti wasn't considered a Deity, like The Great Black Hopes are considered so quickly.

Why was Lacy, Ouma, Peter, Miranda and now Dawson elected The New King - Glass is half full, while Pavlik, Calzaghe, Wlad, Vitali are glasses half empty????

It's just harder to accept that white fighters are great.

We criticize them a little more because we are not used to them being champions. We are immediately skeptical with white fighters, yet take an optimistic approach with others who look more like the champions we are used to.

I agree with you on the Klits, especially. They are by far the two best fighters in the division. Wlad should long ago been crowned the undisputed HW champion.

I think what winds up happening is this: For most North American fans on here (no offense whatsoever for the old-school guys or the overseas crowd), their lives as boxing fans consisted of watching blacks and latinos beating up on white and asian fighters for the most part in title fights. So, when things cycle in the other direction as they inevitably do, I think that it creates a perception that boxing's having a down period until the next batch of great black and latino fighters comes along to restore the general idea of the status quo. I've seen some good fighters get thrown under the bus completely when they fail in that endeavor (Jeff Lacy's a great example of this). I don't think it's fair, I just call it as I see it. Jermain Taylor might be the only example I can think of in recent years where a high profile black fighter lost to a white one and people actually rallied around him instead of throwing him aside like garbage. I was glad to see that because there's enough stress on the line in a title/big fight without having to worry about people around you treating you like a bum because a "white boy" beat you.

like some one posted its about perception, we got a lot of people who grew up with black and brown fighters dominating the boxing scene and seen white and asian fighters get beaten by them. So when guys like pacquio, pavlik and calz splashed on the scene, many just thought that a black or brown fighter would come and put them in their place. if white and asian fighters consistently dominate then perceptions will change.

at the end of the day you're just using a few fighters as examples......anyone can do that

i can name white or asian fighters that have been hyped up only to be proven that there not as good as people say they are....Jason litzau, Amir Khan, Tomasz Adamek, Enzo Maccaranelli, Mikkel Kessler, Ricky Hatton, Michael Katsidis...etc... the list goes on and on

and then theres also black fighters that get down played as "black hype jobs" like you said and latino fighters too..... Dawson, Haye, Mayweather (for the longest), Berto, Kendall Holt, Williams, Margaritio, Cotto, Cunningham, Bell, Gomez, Arreola etc.... once again the list goes on and on

it's a 2-way street son, both sides play the same hand....dont make it seem like it's just "black and browns"...because at the end of the day every race is gulity for doing this......and individual nations as well

white people underate black fighters, black people underrate white fighters, asian underrate latinos, latino's underrate asains, and so on and so forth.......

even black american's underrate british blacks, and vice versa......same as white americans underrate eastern European whites

it's something every color, race, or nationality is guilty of....all it is, is that you want see your own people succeed, and theres nothing wrong with that, not to say that everyone doesn't because a few dont make a whole....and there's always someone in any group or race that will do it, just as there are some that don't....thats life

Oh yeah. From my bi-racial(half black half white) perspective. There is certainly discrimmination when it comes to white and oriental fighters being recognized. Hell one of my Filipino buddies told me Pacman wasnt good until he fought a "colored" guy.

But there is alot of racial nonsense in boxing. It just comes with the territory, boxing has never been as PC as other sports and America as a whole. Steretypes arent limited to one race. Hell Mosley was labeled a slickster lol, even though that wasnt his game, mostly because he's black.

I'd say everyone realizes in the white and black boxing following community that both Pavlik and Calzaghe are real. I mean, when you see Pavlik, he doesnt look like much, just from appearances, so that might have soemthing to do with it. I dont think anyone truly respects anyone at heavyweight regardless of color though. So I dont think the Klitschko's will be getting any mainstream popularity anytime soon and I just think thats down to their style, not their race.

And you don't think Black fighters are picked apart as least as much? Floyd Mayweather Jr was and he is leagues above anyone you mentioned. What about the black fighters you ignored like undisputed cruserweight David Haye, Spinks (who beat Kazamin), Campbell (no1 at lightweight), Joan Guzman, Paul Williams (no1 welterweight) was that racist of you? What about your ignoring the best Latin fighters - Margarito, Juan Diaz, Marquez, - was that racist of you?

    Vitali - top HW
    Wlad - top HW
Pavlik - top MW, has to do some work if hes to be considered great, Taylor win was BIG, Miranda was a decent win, no one thought Miranda was great with a brain and Pavlik gets way more TV time than Miranda, I dont see your point on race with this
Calzaghe - great SMW unified a division
Abraham - needs to get a big fight because hes never had 1 and is simply a contender
Kessler - very good, beat Mundine and Beyer, but lost to Calazage, so hes not elite
Valuev - decent belt holder but does nothing special
Chagaev - lazy fat ex-belt holder
Karmazin - won a big fight then lost to Spinks

Oh it kinda sounds like sour grapes....If you look at it from the otherside you could say that its the other way around...EX-Pac is the first p4p fighter that I can remember that has 3 loses and 2 draws and could have as many as 6 or 7 loses. Wlad has been knocked out three times by average to less then average fighters yet people are still claiming him to be one of the greatest heavyweights of all times...Joe Calzaghe has maybe the weakest resume of any top/elite fighter in the history of boxing. And as far as Pavlik goes it seems that 75 to 80% of the people bashing him happen to be white european calzaghe fans:good

To continue the flip side black and brown fighters go under the radar all the time Tim Bradley whom I would compare to Paulie Maggs, yet he was totally unknown until he beat up Witter, while Maggs had his hype machine blowing full steam ahead while he was still fighting 6 and 8 round fights.

Its all in how you look at it....Now I will admitt that TV in the USA is slow to put white fighters on thier shows, white American fighters that is..That I believe goes back to the sideshow that was put on for Holmes vs Cooney, and the number of people that were burnt and pissed at how Cooney got beat up, it was at that point in history that alot of white Americans turned their backs on boxing and was also abou the time that Boxing fell from free tvs listings:good

"son"? :nut lets keep it respectful, thanks.

outside of Hatton and Kahn to an extent, none of those white (and Pakistani / English) fighters were hyped to the level of Lacy, Miranda, Taylor, or Peter. And Hatton certainly has an army of detractors. And they shouldn't be hyped huge, which is my point. There seems to be far more hero worship of the black and brown fighters and less contructive criticism. The white / asian fighters seem to get both more intelligent criticism and just down right venemous antipathy.

I think the criticisms of Haye have mostly been that he is running his mouth before accomplishing anything at Heavyweight. With Mayweather most people, even those that criticise him will concede the guy is a master boxer, an incredible talent, but he too, acts like he ran the table, when he bailed out of the most exciting division of boxing leaving the greatest challenges untested.

If Mayweather had been white, I wonder if the criticisms would be far worse and the praise not as forthcoming.

Do you honeslty think Cotto, Dawson, Williams and Holt are considered hype jobs? They seem to get plenty of respect despite their deficiencies.

I just don't see all these "damage control" threads after a brown or black fighter caps a major victory. But you seem them, endless threads, whenever a white fighter wins. Examples: - Morales was shot in the second and third Pac fights, Barrera was shot in the second and bad camp in the first, Marquez won 11 rounds in Pac / JMM one :nut and won the second for sure, nevermind what we said before the fight Peter was always a joke so Vitali's victory is meaningless, Ouma was sick vs Karmazin, Miranda was overweight, Zag really lost to Hops, etc etc.

Its like I feel there is this immense determination to downplay every victory a white fighter has. Like, for example, if Chad Dawson was white, I feel like we wouldn't be talking about should he be pound for pound #1 we would be talking about, well, the dude got knocked down vs Adamek, my man Johnson wooped him and they stole it from him cuz Dawson is their white hope, he beat Tarver so what? Tarver is OLD.

Do you see what I mean? There seems to be all this racially tipped venom out there where people will decide whether they will downplay a fighter's accomplishments not based on what they think of the fighter but what his race is.

Obviously this isn't everyone, but it seems to be a lot more of it focused on white/asian rather than black/ brown, meaning, threads that don't make a whole lot of sense that just jacknife a fighters performance in an overboard fashion.

I mean, to me, to say that Vitali's victory was meaningless, is pretty absurd. I can go with the idea that he simply exposed Peter before someone else did, which itself is debatable, maybe it took a Vitali to do it and do it well, but to come on here and make a thread whose sole point is to let us know that we shouldn't give him any credit at all, to me that strikes me as somebody just hating it when a guy gets credit and wanting to deflate it.

And I see these attempts at deflation with the white / asian guys way more than the black / brown.

Example: Lacy hits Reid extremely late after the break, and hurts Reid, and ends up stopping Reid, and Pemberton, and stop the presses. Its Mike Tyson thundering down the street, everyone be very scared. I swear, if Pavlik was black or Pacquiao Mexican, the threads would be insane just going off the Lacy pre Calzaghe threads. And Pavlik and Pac have already accomplished incredible feats yet half the threads are "Just you wait! He is in for it this time! He sucks!!!" threads.

But like others have written, I think its ingrained in our sociology, the black and the brown are the fighting races. I don't think its just brown and black posters that write this stuff, I think its posters of every race, who just have been conditioned to look as the black and brown fighters as the natural kings and the white ones as hype jobs. Certainly, it has played out that way many times, but so it has with every race.

Hmmmm…. I think the best reply here is many top Asian level fighters ( Not Pacquaio ) are unknown because they hardly are shown on western TV, and often fight in the lower weight classes such as fly, bantam or feather. It takes a top level match up for me to watch boxing at 112-126 pounds.

I think some white fighters used to be under rated, but that isn’t the case anymore. Instead, those who used to under rate white fighters have conceded, and changed their tune to boxing just isn’t very good anymore in an attempt to discredit them.

All a fighter can be is the best in his era.
