Are most posters biased in favor of fighters from their country?

That's interesting to me. Collazo's no bum either. He gave Hatton all he could handle. Should have gotten at least a draw and kept his belt.

LMAO damn I just caught what you stated here so I guess you consider Cotto an American fighter because of PR common wealth status with the USA, I respect your view on that because technically speaking your right. But essentially P.Rico is its own country.

I'm from Australia and honestly there isn't any fighter from here I would call myself a fan of. Some of my favourite fighters are Roberto Duran, Ricardo Lopez, Tommy Hearns, Roy Jones Jr, Yuri Arbachakov, Yuriorkis Gamboa, Miguel Cotto and Cristian Mijares.

There are other things you can root for: the underdog, the smaller guy, the skinnier guy, the guy you have followed for a long time etc, or the best guy. I guess it makes sense if you went to the same high school as the guy or were from the same town.

Story: I was watching the Calzaghe/Hopkins fight at this bar in New York that happened to dominated by British boxing fans and I asked a fellow patron who was the most popular British fighter presently? He said Hatton. I asked about Calzaghe and the guy's response was that he was Welsh, and British people look down upon welshmen (Not that it stopped them from rooting for Calzaghe that night). I wasn't even aware of the stereotype, but I thought it amusing. Oh, and I was rooting for Calzaghe that night too.

Not always but that's common. Being nationalistic is a trait that can't be separated from this sports.

Tell me I'm wrong, but Cotto is actually from PR, right? Isn't the distinction if you were born on the island or born in the US?

Of course there's Nationalistic bias on this forum. Boxing is a professional sport. You name me one international sport where that type of bias doesn't exist. Just the way it is I guess, however I do route for fighters from all over the world....except for some British fighters. They're particularly arrogant and with the exception of Rickey Hatton (who is just a cool, down to Earth, likable guy) most of 'em rub me the wrong ****ing way. Its that haughty British arrogance that I can't stand and I'm open about it. Thats part of the reason I don't like Calzagay....the main reason is because he's overrated and his style is f'n *****. Most of my favorite fighters aren't even American: Cotto, Margarito, Darchinyan, Abraham, Miranda, Arce, Pacman....Actually the more i've seen of Haye and Froch, the bigger fan I become and they're both British. Call me what you will but at least I'm being honest....and I have never, ever criticized a fighter and his fans more than Mayweather and he's American. :hat

Yes Cotto is born and from PR, but Puerto Ricans from the island are US citizens and can come to the States with no problem and are not consider immigrants technically.

Very true. There are alot of great fighters from different ethnicities that I cheered for in the past and now. If you have a Irish fighter that is making noise, Irish fans will root for him even if they don't watch boxing. If a Boricua is fighting, I have to admit I will watch and see if he measures up. Some people just fall right into it. Better example will be this new HW the nightmare. I bet if he keeps up with his wins, more and more Mexicans will follow and that is even if they don't watch boxing. People make it into some "he is going to make a difference to our people" kind of thing. There just fighters trying to live the dream of becoming a champion someday and making enough money to take care of their families. Hard living to make though.

I'm American and I tend to root for Mexican fighters for many reasons. I admit I probably almost always root for the Mexican or Mexican American wether he stands a chance or not. And even if he is destroyed and comes back ala Vargas, he will always have my support. I feel to a certain degree that they are like family, I know them, I can relate to them.

    1. I like the Mexican machismo style.
    2. I share a similar culture to them since my parents were born in Mexico.
    3. I've met more pro MX fighters than non Mexican fighters because of where I live.

I also like other fighters who are not Mexican for various other reasons.

    Examples:

Zab Judah- I like his character.
Kassim Ouma- His destruction of Kofi Jantuah sold me + his story and likable personality.
Arturo Gatti- How can you not like or root for him. Though I rooted for Leija in their fight.
Angel Manfredy- Very likable guy. Even when Corrales beat him I was a bit pissed, BUT that fight made me into a Corrales fan.

and on and on and on.....

English people can goto Scotland and vice versa just with a few minutes drive, they're both British but it doesn't make them both English or Scottish. :patsch

Of course Puerto Ricans aren't Americans.

I've read alot of your posts. So why hate on Pac? He fights like a mexican. Just because he out-"Mexican"s all the Mexicans he's faced doesn't mean you have to discredit him...I know I know, you're prolly gonna counter with JMM beating him twice in your eyes, but ask yourself, did JMM fight Pac like a Mexican? And lets not even talk about that MAB rematch...that was a glorified sparring section.

Lets put it this way, Manny Pac fights like a Mexican, only he's blessed with physical attributes most boxers can't match today--freakish speed and power. So what r u waiting for already....migt as well be a Pac convert.

btw-you share a cultural connection with Pac as well.
