Are people being overly harsh on Canelo since his loss to Bivol?

Boxing fans really are something else sometimes. Canelo just became undisputed at 168lbs and chose to challenge himself against a legit threat at 175. He loses big against the champion who is also known as a skilled technician and now all of a sudden people are using this opportunity to completely sh()t on him and downplay his achievements. It seems to be a typical pattern whenever a fighter that is on top loses all of a sudden and people will immediately jump on it and say that he was exposed, overrated, bum, etc. I get that people aren't fond of Canelo's history of having advantages in his fights but what boxing superstar didn't tip everything in their favor?

He's had 2 offical losses, both being master boxers. It's not like he lost to some average chumps, Mayweather and Bivol are elite level fighters that he came up short against. Canelo is no doubt a great fighter and a certified ATG without a doubt, that is something that can't be denied. And this loss to Bivol isn't going to be huge black mark to his legacy. He'll continue being the Top P4P fighter while also being a cash cow, so long as he doesn't take this loss badly and continues to win.

I do but I think Canelo challenged Bivol based on his last two very pedestrian fights. I don't believe Canelo when he says Bivol was the tougher challenge. Go fight Charlo.

For starters GGG. And also a few undefeated champs such as Smith, Saunders, Plant. Helluva resume.

Smith, Saunders, and Plant were unproven. And basically garbage.

Smith lost badly to Ryder, but got the gift.

Saunders looked like ass for many years after Lemieux.

Plant looked like ass against shot Caleb Truax.

He gave his belt to GGG and then fought him for the belt years later when GGG was older.

Canelo beat a couple of paper champs at 168 and he became overrated to high heaven, i.e. people arguing he’s top 20 p4p of all time, he would beat the ATGs at LHW etc, so I think it’s fair that the pendulum is now swinging back the other way.

Seems like a fair reaction after being told he's p4p #1 for years despite hardcore fans knowing he could get totally outboxed and made to look silly by the right guy. Consider other p4p #1 talents (Usyk, Mayweather, Crawford), and try to imagine them being COMPREHENSIVELY outboxed like Canelo was. Wouldn't happen.

Or perhaps Canelo was so good that he made them look like garbage? Those guys were champions for a reason, they're not just average scrubs with no talents. It's not Canelo's fault that those were the guys that he needed to beat to be undisputed.

At some point he was gonna run into a brick wall and that guy happened to be Bivol who is no slouch for anyone.

Again, people are really going overboard with Canelo losing, as if he was never a great fighter.

No one was impressed by Crawford's run at 140, either.

They were champions in a wasteland w/ only David Benevidez being the only challenge.

And I did point out that Smith received a massive gift, Saunders has looked like garbage in the last few years, and Plant looked terrible against a shot guy...

I think people are being overly harsh. Canelo still challenged himself and came up short, plenty of other fighters never challenge themselves and just take the money. Canelo could have fought much softer touches than Bivol.

However, Canelo also got overrated because of his star power. He has always been a plodder and that style isn't P4P material usually because Canelo is always going to have problems with fighters who can move. He also still has questionable stamina, he started faster here and all it did was wear him out quicker.

Every fighter has flaws, even tiny ones but Canelo's are pretty glaring. He'll still be a fan favorite for the Mexican base but this loss at least should bring him down to earth as a fighter. He should try and match himself up with fighters who are similar to him, like GGG or Benavidez, both guys who are flat-footed. They'll make for good fights.

I'll give you a hint. For example he beat a guy who would rather bang his own mother than to go up in weight and fight bivol. Still, you hug his nuts nonstop.

He clearly lost to GGG twice .. as for the other 3 their SMW legacy basically consists of a shot Groves & Caleb Truax .. an OLD Truax.. Truax even in his prime couldn't even beat a shot Taylor! 168 these days is a wasteland. There's a reason he chose to unify that **** hole.. & BTW, even then it was an inactive Callum Smith LOL..

I agree I'll give him his dues taking on a hard fight but at same time he has been given the rub of the green enough times.

Smith was done at 168lbs. He lost to Ryder and was weight drained.
