Are punchers like Julian Jackson and GGG using different technique?

GGGs mental strength and control are one of his assets. Tyson had the hate, but he also tried to bite a guy's ear off.

Watch Kovalev take a guy out. I think he enjoys his job. But he won't take big risks dropping his hands throwing haymakers. He hurts a guy, sizes up the situation and then goes to work methodically. He could take out his opponents earlier but chooses lower risk.

There aren't just 3 things required to make a good boxer. There are a multitude of skills and abilities that work together in different ways.

The hate might be a good or bad thing depending on the situation. It'll get a guy off the streets training his ass off and super motivated but it can cause issues too.

Of course there are more than 3 requires abilities, IB didn't imply otherwise.

^ They are the foremost necessities to become a legendary puncher. You won't find any that don't have some combination of 2 of them, but all three is exceedingly rare.

...and in Tyson's case it was very much the intersectionality of his rage and his training causing those emotions to be a harnessable utility and not a liability.

It's genetics, proper punching technique is known, it's no secret. Their muscles/build just allow them to exert more force.

And before someone says, "they got good timing", many fighters have good timing, they're not knocking people out like Jackson did though.

Genetics, timing, craft and mentality can all play a role. The proportion varies by individual.

    interesting perspective.
i would have to add, that although ggg doesnt carry that stored up rage, he is not totally emotionless. i think ggg is the ultimate alpha male in a sport dominated by alpha males. he is the toughest guy in the neighborhood and hes going to let you know it. the way he struts when he drops an opponent is straight up street corner.
as far as his punching power, i think its an equal parts genetics, technique and balance. he has good technique and impeccable balance, but the software his brain controls his body with, is much more advanced than the rest of the pack. it just knows instinctively how to get the most leverage and transfer of force from most positions and using various punches.

They all play a role but at the top level especially, not equally. Genetics is still by far the most determining factor and it's obvious.

From what I've seen when most big punchers/coaches are presented with this very question, majority agree that it's born and not made.

Though I remember reading that Dempsey book once and he has a somewhat different technique to gain power, where he "falls" unassisted and uses gravity to somehow generate more power.

    Sonny Liston .

People wonder where the hell did his savage power came from.

Breaking facial bones with just a jab alone.

He never lifted weights from what ive heard. Just a freakishly powerful human being.

I do believe it was both his technique and of course his extraordinary genetics.

Punching is as in depth of an "art" and technique, as boxing in itself. It requires creativity to figure out how to get big punches out of your body. And determination to keep trying different things until you can consistently throw heavy shots.

GGG and Wilder are the only two serious power punchers I see at the elite stage.

I think we can now stop mentioning lil G with the Hawk when it comes to punching power. There is no one Lil G has ko'd that Jackson wouldn't have
