Lets see. These fighters were Kronk Gym fighters : Thmoas Hearns , Michael Moorer (tall for 175 , not quite proven there) , Gerald McClellan (maybe the exception) , Duane Thomas , Mike McCallum (was stopped at the ams sometimes , but was not a Kronk fighter for long) , Lennox Lewis , Wladimir Klitschko , Andy Lee. Jameel McCline was only trained by Kronk to be a sparring partner , wasn't he ? These fighters were not Kronk fighters : Bob Foster (an exception) , Muhammad Ali , George Foreman , Larry Holmes , Michael Spinks , James Smith , Tony Tucker , Riddick Bowe , Michael Grant (Lewis fouled him and it was an ancle break against McCline) , Lance Whitaker , Vitali Klitschko , Nicolay Valuev , Paul Williams , Kelly Pavlik , Antonio Tarver , Chad Dawson , Mark Breland (an exception) , Maurice Blocker , Johnny Bumphus , Milton McCrory. Is Emanuel Steward really a good trainer after considering this comparison ? He just seems like someone who picks the right fighters and barely improves them. What do they teach in the Kronk Gym , the art of jabbing , moving and clinching ? with the occasional (rare) straight punch of course . Lewis even seems like a rebellious student , who sometimes insisted on fighting the not (Kronkwise) disciplined fight.
I just think shorter fighters with glass chins get weeded out quicker by the time they are professional. If you're stubby armed and have a broad-shouldered & low-center-of-gravity torso, you're likely to try the Julio Cesar Chavez approach. Once you start getting touched and you fold like a deflated tortilla, however, it's safe to say the sport isn't for you. Unless you turn into something like Nicolino Locche but how often does that happen. Tall guys with lots of skill often don't find out until they're tested much later. Some make it, some don't. But the feeble would-be pressure fighting dwarves aren't likely to be anywhere near the elite by the time this dichotomy presents itself.
But how do you explain the fact that the statistics are that much against Kronk fighters than other big men for their weight classes ?
Interesting answer but not to the subject. The subject is about how do you explain that most Kronk fighters have glass chin while non Kronk fighters doesn't . Does Emanuel Steward choose the goose necked fighters exclusively ?
:think Part of that was because theres guys, you left out and some of the guys you said had glass chins didnt. For instance Mccallum had a great chin and never stopped as a pro..Even recupurated from a Jackson bomb to ko him the next round!! Gerald Mccellan had a good chin,in fact to good for his own good, did you see the Nigel Benn fight? They went to war for 10 rounds no one with a glass jaw couild have lasted that long, and he went down because of near fatal injuries, which meant he took alot of punishment and had to be nearly killed to be taken out. Also tall Tony Tucker had a very good chin, taking prime Mike Tyson's shots. Leeonzer Barber was a tall LH 6-3 and had a good chin, and showed it against some good punchers, never stopped till he moved up and that was in one of his last fights, from accumalation. Also Duane Thomas wasnt that tall. See thats as many or more good chins from Kronk than bad ones.
I agree, these fights illustrate that Lewis had a good chin: Lewis-VK [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JlFhLg4l0hY[/ame] Lewis-Briggs [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jcFtcyKVCaI[/ame] Lewis-Mercer [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DtdkasY9LvA[/ame] Lewis-Mason [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gZ9RfIIYSfw[/ame] [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2K3x3z3bNMc[/ame] [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JmxhSKVGX9A[/ame]
One name: Panama Al Brown. 5'11" tall, weighed under 118 pounds for his title bouts, went out a winner at age 40, and was never stopped in 168 bouts, going the distance in 106 of those matches. He won his final bantamweight title bout over Sangchili when approaching 38. Whether or not a tall fighter's chin is vulnerable is conditional. BoxWRECK currently indicates only a pair of knockdowns courtesy of Domenico Bernasconi in two different fights, both won by Brown. Yes, he was fast, skilled and mobile. Yes, his chin was not easy to reach. But how realistic is it to suppose his ability to withstand punishment to both the chin and body was not tested at all, in an era of six ounce gloves, at the world class level, for that length of time and that many contests?
About Manny Steward and his training methods, he came under some scrutiny for the fact that he kept the Kronk gym hot and humid, and the stereotype that so many of his fighters looked like emaciated road runners led to charges that his regimen left his stable of competitors dehydrated and enervated. Whether it's true or not, it can't be said that they were especially renowned for their staying power, although his first champion, Hilmer Kenty, did come off the floor in round one to produce a come from behind win in bringing Kronk that inaugural title. (This was a massive and sensational upset which came out of nowhere. Ernesto Espana had previously been seen coming off the deck to fracture Johnny Lira's jaw in Lira's own Chicago, and it was figured he'd break Hilmer in half before the Kronk faithful in Detroit. Kenty brought Steward and the Kronk gym of age in as memorable a way as it could have happened.)
McCallum was stopped more than once (and probably more than twice) at the amateurs although at least as a pro he was not chinny. He didn't take no shot from Jackson though , I watched the fight so spare the effort of embedding from youtube. McClellan wasn't chinny , I agree , he even came damaged into the (Benn) fight. The blinking started at least as soon as the first Jackson fight , I believe. I did mention near some of the names that they were exceptions. Again , Tucker and Smith were too tall for Tyson and took no shots from him , at least nothing near flush. But I gave Tucker as an example of a not chinny fighter. True that Duane Thomas wasn't that tall for a 154 lbs fighter , but taller than the average there nonetheless .
