Are the Klitschko brothers overrated because they fight in such a terrible division?

I think they would be more than competitive in any era, top 5 in any of them. Their size and ability to use their size effectively/smartly guarantees that. Heck, I think Vitali has enough stamina for 15 round fights.

 

People don't realize that the division has changed somewhat. It WAS terrible Post-Lewis, we saw Wlad underperforming and Vitali retiring after beating horrendous competition. So along came the low-level or old guys (Maskaev, Ruiz, drug cheat Toney, Lyakhovich, Briggs, Valuev, Brewster) and picked up the belts. The only constant quality was Chris Byrd, a champ in the late-Lewis and a champ in the post-Lewis era.

But then a crop of young or rejuvenated fighters came. Peter, deadly puncher KTFO opposition and dominating Toney in their 2nd fight. Chagaev, a 2-time Amateur World Champion. Ibragimov, an Olympic silver medalist. And gold medalist, rededicated and recreated Wlad. And these guys whiped out the above mentioned 'terrible' division. Byrd, the very capable HW who beat Tua, Holyfield and McCline, was dominated (again) and KO’d by Wlad.

Although without an American champ, this division looked a lot stronger, and the Brocks, Chambers' and Thompsons' couldn't get to the top anymore (they could’ve beaten the Briggs' and Maskaevs).

Then the Klitschkos took it to another level. Wlad dominated Ibragimov and Chagaev, Vitali came back to dominate Peter, the highly skilled Gomez and the unbeaten puncher, Arreola, all of them very capable fighters, who would not only beat the Briggs and Maskaevs of the terrible years, but the Brocks, and Thompsons as well. And we have the Povetkins and Boystovs, Peter and Chambers rededicating themselves with Arreola most likely joining them. And there’s World CW Champ Haye, who'll beat Valuev, and the Kevin Johnsons, Solis', Perez' and others.

No, this division is far from being terrible. It was terrible, then a new crop of fighters came, just not well known in the US. But when we could've said 'stronger', the Klitschkos started to dominate this improved opposition. I mean utterly dominate.

 

You sir just summed up my thoughts. If anything the Klitschkos are making the division better because people such as James Toney or Sam Peter can't just come in out of shape and have a good chance of winning a belt. You have to eat, drink, and sleep boxing 24/7 365 days a year. Thats what the Klitschko do and not only that they are smarter, bigger, better than anyone else right now.

 

Or are they underrated because they can't get a fight against another elite HW to prove their greatness. They keep doing all that can be asked of them, knocking out whoever is in front of them, yet they get no love.

Man stop with the hating. I don't understand how people can hate on the klitscko brothers. They are not cocky and always respect their opponent. Vitali is a freaking beast stopping 37 of his 38 opponents. So what if they're in a weak era. They are still fighting the best in their division. The only downside is they won't fight each other.

 

Totally agree. I think they are decent and have the skills, but the HW division is in a shambles atm....so bad infact, that I never watch it. They clearly dominate due to lack of competition.

WW will always be my fav division.

 

BigBones post is a better more realistic look at the division. Those Heavys are all different sizes, shapes, styles & all from different parts of the world. Ukraine, Russia, USA, UK, Cuba, Nigeria, Mexico, Belarus, etc.

How much more diverse would you expect it to be? You have new guys coming up like Povetkin, Boytsov, Johnson, Chambers & Solis. Old guys like Tua, Briggs & Ruiz. You even have a former Cruiserweight stepping up for good measure (and an eventual beating) how is that not a good thing?
