Imo he is most definitely not as good as he was in the Lewis fight. You only have to watch that fight and his comeback fights to see that. However he is imo an ATG and like all ATG's he is good enough even past peak to defeat the current crop of heavyweight contenders. I say he should reign for as long as he wishes or until someone defeats him and as there does not appear to be any serious/dangerous contenders around, he may be around for quite some time, unless he suffers a recurrence of the injuries that forced him to retire in the first place.

What about the monstrous uppercut in the fourth round that opened up the huge cut on his mouth?
I saw Vitali boxing at range countering Lewis well as he came
in aggressively in the opening stages.

The counters became less effective as Lewis closed the gap.

Im sure both fighters were tired it was a very physical fight, but Vitali certainly looked the worse of the two I dont see how you could dispute that and how you could question who was landing the more effective punches??

Vitali became a linear champ by beating the number 2-Sanders, who beat Wlad. So, doesn't count there. Vitali was retired for years while Wladimir had clearly became the real number one and a unified champion. So...the fact that VK came back and they won't fight probably isn't much of a big deal. Moot point to me.

We have been over this a thousand times.

    Dempsey never fought Wills.

Johnson never gave Langfod a defense, nor any other member of murderer's row.

Louis rarely defended against other black fighters.

Patterson never defended agaisnt Machon, Foley, or Williams

Even Ali never rematched George Foreman

Holmes openly ducked Page and Thomas, and to a lesser degree Dokes and Coetzee

Bowe threw a title in the trash rather than fight the guy who knocked him out as an amatuer.

You can forgive the two of these guys for being brothers who love each other...

    ...and their mum.

You can forgive them - but when assessing their place as ATGs logic dictates that one man ruling a division is a far greater achievement than two men doing it between them.
But they havent even unified the belts between the both of them - dominating the division should mean having the WBA title as well - Tyson did this single handedly at 21 years old!

I'd love to see them fight each other, even though it will probably be as dull as an all-Williams sisters final at Wimbledon.

But in my eyes they will only be fighting for 2nd best of their generation. There is still one foe they have yet not managed to conquer:

These are my feelings about the Klitschkos exactly.

Don't get me wrong, theyre very good fighters and they have dominated the division, but they exist together as this two headed champion.

This means neither of them have become undisputed champion or ever fought the number two fighter out there. When the rest of the competition out there is so poor this doesn't bode well.

Neither of them will have ever faced the other best fighter of their reign. You can't call someone an all time great under these circumstances!

I know they made a promise to their mother etc and thats fine. I would never fight my brother either but they (and their fans) cant expect them to be regarded as greats.

Also look at their resumes. Theyre both pretty dire. The only real "elite" fighter either of them have fought has been Lewis and Vitali lost that.

This isn't a hate post. I respect them for being the best heavyweights since Lennox retired in 2004.

They are brothers ruling the division. It's a once in 100+ years event that true boxing fans should be enjoying.
It's unique, it gets people talking. And besides, once Vitali retires it will be Wlad by himself ruling the division.

But the fact that they don't fight each other means one of them wont have and L on their record which they should have.
It could also be argued that any fighter who's only loss is to a Klitchko has a resume as good if not better than the other Klitschko....

Imagine Ali and Joe Frazier were brothers who never fought each other - Their resumes would be exceptional and their longevity would be massively increased as they wouldn't have had wars between the 1 & 2 rated heavyweights..

But, damn it, lol. Wlad WAS ruling the division and Vitali just decided to come back. It's not as two-headed as people are making it out to be. Wladimir is THE champion. We should all be down with this.

The problem with that is many people think that Vitali would/could beat Wladimir in a fight and part of being THE champ is being the toughest guy around. If Wlad was clearly superior, this would not be an issue.

As for people saying brothers ruling is a unique position and we should like it...I disagree...I respect the decision not to fight a family member, but I certainly don't have to like the situation. Heck..what if there were triplets...what if a family of 9 ruled the heavyweight division without fighting each other? What if a couple of heavyweights decide that they are really good friends and don't want to fight each other? Yeah, it's good for them but bad for fans of boxing. This is why there really can't be any exceptions. The top guys have to fight each other if someone wants the credit of being THE Champ. Especially when there is no lineage around.
