Are there any good reasons why pro boxing in its current form should not be banned?

The point is to hurt the other guy as much as possible as quickly as possible. Mostly this is done by punching the other guy as hard as you can, as often and as fast as you can in the head. Any punch to the head is traumatic to the brain. Even the slightest brain trauma is dangerous and could be seriously disabling and fatal. So, why should such barbaric practices be sanctioned in a civilised society?

And is it not immoral that armchair fans pay men to punch each other in the head, knowing full well how dangerous that is?

We are disgusted when people organise fights involving dogs, but we are very happy to organise fights involving humans. Why? Is the health and life of a dog worth more than that of a person?

So, are there any reasons whatsoever why boxing should NOT to be banned?

I've thought about this before. People will bring up freedom to do as you want, if guys want to fight they should be able to. Its not even as dangerous as many other sports, but the thing here is the aim is to hurt/inflict damage on another person.

    Tough one to argue for.

I guess it depends wether your of the mindset to ban people from doing things that are risky, or to inform them of the risks and leave it up to them.

Where do you draw the line?

Would you ban ALL contact sports? There are risks associated with them all, maybe not as much risk of brain injury but getting tackled playing football(U.S,) or rugby (U.K, Aus etc,) can cause injuries. Football(UK i.e soccer US,) players often need hip replacements in their late 30's / early 40's and end up in wheelchairs as they get older.

Even running can damage your bones as you send more pressure through them than they are designed for (3 times your normal bodyweight).

It may not be the intention of those sports to cause damage but it is an inevitable consequence of the sport in each case.

In boxing it is not as inevitable that competitors will be damaged as they themselves, their corners and the referees are meant to protect them from the potentially most damaging scenarios.

One day, if some people had their way, everyone would be frozen in liquid nitrogen the moment they are born so that their cells don't deteriorate and no-one will ever die.....or live.

If you can argue for professional boxing, you can argue for organising gunfights or even games of Russian roulette.

Every year or so you hear of a young football player collapsing on the field from a fatal heart attack. Clearly, cardiovascular overexertion can be fatal. Should we ban football too? Or if not football, how about other long distance contests - every year you hear people dying in the middle or after a marathon race.

Well the end of a dogfight is when 1 of the dogs is dead, and also its not the dog's choice to fight, they are forced by the owner who is the one who benefits, Boxing is not like that thats why they have a ref, a ringside doctor and trowing in the towel and fighters agree to fight because they want to, and the reward.

You might have a point if the purpose of boxing was to fight to the death, but we all know that is not the case.

Duels and Russian Roulette are games that are played to the death, so the comparison is invalid.

As far as I'm concerned, individuals should be allowed to do whatever they want if they are informed of the potential of danger and willingly consent.

I also want to add that I 100% support dog fighting, **** fighting, and other animal fights. Animals are property, not people.

you can't compare dog fighting and boxing. its all about free-will, nobody forces boxers to fight, and they dont fight to the death apart from in a few tragic cases.
you sound like you write for the daily mail by the way.and whats with the benn mclellan picture, irony ?

my mum dispises it. actually rather funny becuase her brother her dad and her sister all know and enjoy a bit of boxing.the main thing is that i consider a ko or a cut an accident.

i have no quams watching Ian Napa put on a clinic with no ko or knockdowns. it's the guys who look for a ko i think are not ture boxing fans but fight fans. and a reason why mma gets alot of attention.

also some people excel at fighting they have a sort of warrior gene...so why stop them. guys who want to fight usually cant hold down a job and may start getting into a trouble with gangs, drugs, prison ect.
it is using your body to it's absolute peak.

agreed with clearly cool that it's a very tough thing to argue for.

That is clearly false! In boxing, it is inevitable that you will be hurt/damaged because no fight is ended before a punch is landed and any punch that lands causes damage of some kind. It is the whole purpose of the dirty business to hurt and damage your opponent as much as possible as quickly as possible. The referees and corners are only allowed to limit the damage, not to prevent it. So, it should be banned.

the point of boxing is not to hurt the other guy as much a possible.. it is a sport the goal is to hit the other guy and not get hit in return. Thats why there is a point system in boxing. If the goal was just to hurt someone then fights would be determined on knockouts alone. A huge right hand scores the same point that a quick jab does (especially in amatuer boxing). Its not MMA

fighting is human nature ...so if your good at it why not get payed for it.
it is entertaining for fans and it is dangerous but the money is good and like danger money in a way.
it is dangerous to work on an oil rig but the danger money is good and people need oil just like people need entertainment.
every boxer has a choice to fight or not...he hasnt got a gun to his head making him fight.
there is always a price on what ever job you do.
(decebel if you are not a fan of boxing get off the ****ing site.)

this is a pointless question you might aswell ask should driving cars be banned. cars kill alot more people in a week then boxing ever did or will plus the screw up the enviorment

or how about walking down the street? lets ban that to. many people are killed by walking down street.

at the end of the day boxing is a sport beloved by many people world wide and it is allso the source of income for millions of people who without it would be homeless and starving. why do you think so many mexicans pillipinos and other ethnical groups turn pro so young like 15 16? cos they hav to there countries economy is very weak so boxing becomes a very important part of life

Dogs that are bread to fight want to fight. It's enough for them to be pitted together and they are good to go - they love to fight. You don't have to force them - they do it of their free will.

How much free will does a dog have? Less than a man who loves to fight? The dog might not know the potential consequences of a dog fight but the man does, and he STILL decides to go through with it. Clearly, he must be mad and should be tied up and sent to a psychiatric ward.
