Are there any prime A-level class fighters left out there for Calzaghe to face?

Calzaghe has one maybe two fights maximum left. Many on this board claim Calzaghe has never faced a top level prime fighter in his career and has been contemplating retirement before the Jones fight. Is there anybody he can face to gain some credibility in the eyes of his critics (I'm not one of them) before he hangs up his gloves?

Hopkins II - past prime, same outcome as first fight.
Kessler - eurobum according to the yanks
Dawson - too green, especially if he loses
Johnson - B class fighter at most, now pushing 40

The only drumbeat was from Pavliks fans, but.. ahem.. i think that has somewhat stopped. Possibly Hopkins in Cadiff i think and prepare right, settled into the 175 and the roar of 50,000, very possible. Its a shame hopkins is such a nob.

Kessler is the only A level fighter.

All four of those guys are A level fighters.

Dawson is the top guy, he is not "green".

    Either him or retirement.

If Dawson isn't an "A" fighter then I believe that we are being too frugal in our application of the term. Dawson is around a top 15 pound-for-pound fighter, and that, to me, indicates he would qualify. Should Calzaghe fight and beat him, I would hope everyone would not only be more respectful and appreciative of his accomplishments, but also censure those who would attempt to downplay the victory with comments about Dawson being green. He is early on in his prime, but he is nevertheless in his prime.

I feel the same way, would be a fantastic finale to his career in Cardiff. Although, I believe he already has that accomplishment in defeating Kessler at 168. To achieve the same in two different weight categories would be something very special and push Calzaghe into the top 50 ATG imo. But you can see how any victory over Dawson would be instantly de-legitimized in the eyes of his critics, and there are many of them......

Those that would criticize Joe for a victory over Dawson would be idiots whom we should all ignore.

    Agreed.

The only fighters that can beat Joe are Hopkins and Dawson.

If Joe has one fight left, he isn't going back down to 168. Dawson is the no 1. LHW out there and the only credible challenge left to face. Beat him and alot of people will have to eat so much crow :D . Even without Dawson, Calzaghe is top 100 ATG.

Thanks for the compliment on my post.

I was just about to post the same thing. Given that Hopkins lost to Calzaghe already, it seems reasonable to contend that Dawson is the #1 contender to Calzaghe's title.

We disagree on Hopkins, I think the result would be a wider decision if they faced off again, especially in Cardiff. Lets not forget, Calzaghe had everything against him the first time they faced off. First fight at 175, in the states, three American judges and the biased refereeing performance in favour of Hopkins by 'firm but fair' Cortez . Compare how fussy he was with the Mayweather - Hatton fight but allowed Hopkins to get away with headbutting, holding and low blows and who can forget Borenard's oscar winning performances in the later rounds. The only reason, Cortez pulled Hopkins up on the second one was because it was so excruciatingly obvious :patsch .
