Jewish name yes, by religion no. It is strange I know but I read it years ago that it was a publicity thing his promoter cooked up, maybe someone can expand on this although interesting rather than important.

 

His Father was a Jew and Max self identified was being Jewish but Orthodox Jews only consider you one if your Mother is Jewish so some Jews sort of snubbed him cuz he wasn't from a Jewish womb.

Just googled Max and found that his father was indeed Jewish but his mother was of Irish descent, he was raised in a non-sectarian household as both parents had to be Jewish at the time to be recognised as such. Nowdays, I think you can get around that but not sure, Max certainly did not live the life of an orthodox jew god love him and his wearing of the star did more good than harm.

 

I believe Max wore the SOD in honor of his manager Ancil Hoffman.
